6 left in a $6.60 buy in 6k guaranteed tournament, I am 2nd in chips. Pay outs are:
1st $838
2nd $537
3rd $388
4th $298
5th $233
6th $163
Chip counts are:
1st 3.07 mil (61.39bb)
Me 2.29 mil (45.79bb)
3rd 1.85 mil (36.97bb)
4th 1.30 mil (26.06bb)
5th 728,000 (14.55bb)
6th 581,000 (11.62bb)
Blinds are 25k/50k with a 6k ante

I’m on the button with As9c. Chip leader is UTG and raises to 3.5 bb (has been playing aggressively and raising over 90% of hands). I call and the blinds fold. Flop is 6c3c9h, UTG checks, I bet 5.11 bb (just over half pot) they raise to 19.49 bb, I shove to 42.17 bb, they call and show Qc9d. Turn is 6d and of course the river is the Qh.

Is this just a bad beat or should I be avoiding the chip leader with hands like this considering there are 2 sub 20bb stacks?

I don't know but mostly chips leader are lucky players. Its not like u can't avoid them.

Losing that hand is complete bad beat and it happens to everyone.

Coming to hand A9 os is definitely a fold here. No matter how aggressive the opponent is playing.

Good luck

Easy fold to a 3.5x utg open, pick better spots, let the shorties tangle with themselves and bide your time, punish the big stack and his 3.5x opens when you have a decent hand

Yes, it is a bad beat. Yes, you should carefully consider getting involved against the chip leader with a marginal hand because it is a disaster if you go out before the short stacks.
