I was recently in good shape in a 180 SNG and got my stack ruined by the following 2 hands. Looking for some opinions on how I played these. Should I have done it differently or should I write this kind of thing of to that's the way it goes sometimes. I have been getting knocked out close or at the bubble because of very similar situations to these.

Friends don't let friends min-raise or min-bet flops.

Other than that, you got your hand in with the best of it, so no problems there. Just start raising preflop that's at least 2.5-3.5x the big blind. Min-raising is pointless. No one is folding to a min-raise that would limp in, and players that want to see a flop will pay more than just an extra big blind to do so.

In the second hand when you flopped top pair + a flush draw, bet a real sized bet. You're very lucky you got raised there, on a flop where you want to get your money in.

Both these hands were fairly late in the tourney and getting close to the bubble. I find that people are less likely to limp even to a min raise and I will get the type of reaction from weaker players that I got on the KK which I think is exactly what I am looking for except that I am not winning them as often as I would expect to. Actually, I find myself losing that hand more often than winning. In the second hand I was trying to get a feel for the AJ which was the hand I was most concerned with losing to. His little reraise gave me all the information I needed to push him a little harder but again I found myself exactly where I think I want to be and feel like I am losing in these situations more often than winning. I didn't save the hand that knocked me out but I had about 4000 chips left and decided to try and limp with Q10s on the button as I had not seen anything close to playable since that second hand above that I lost. Same player..."someonelse" limped from the small blind....flop was QJ7...I pushed all in and he called with an AQ. I got no help turn or river and got knocked out at #20. He now had 18000 chips with an average stack size of ~12K. About 8 hands later a shortstack pushed allin the top stack reraised allin and he called. Shortstack had 99 topstack had 1010 and the guy who took all my chips had AQo and did not receive any help from the board this time. He went out #18 and ITM. When I am in this position late in the game I found myself getting knocked out like this way too often so I tried something different and played very tight and found myself ITM more but with just enough chips to play a few hands and get a min payout. Since I have tried a few different strategies late in the tourney and seem to be getting similar results I was trying to come up with the best way to play there. With a little more info from me here would you give me the same advice or do you think there might be a better way to handle this?

p.s. I really appreciate your feedback

I find that people are less likely to limp even to a min raise
This is just because the button is closer, so they're less likely to limp period. No matter what the raise.

And when you had KK, and you min-raised preflop. What are you going to do when you want to steal the blinds? Min-raise as well? You need a standard raise that is folding away hands when you need it to get folds, yet still gets called by hands you beat. I think a happy medium is about 2.5-3xBB this late in the tournament.

In the second hand I was trying to get a feel for the AJ which was the hand I was most concerned with losing to.
Why are you concerned with AJ? You're 40% to beat AJ, even if he is holding the ace of spades! You should be stacking here in a tournament, especially one this loose.

played very tight and found myself ITM more but with just enough chips to play a few hands and get a min payout
It really depends on what the min payout is. In a 10 man SnG, the money for 3rd place isn't all that bad. But for a freeroll, getting 30th place out of 1000 only gets you 25 cents!

But if this barely making the money & then bubbling out problem is happening often, then it sounds like you're afraid of getting your money in bad a little too much. You should be looking to grow your stack in the middle stages of the tournament, and its okay to take risks to grow your stack. Play a lot of hands just for their implied odds. Target stacks that are bigger than yours, and try to see flops cheaply against them with hands like suited connectors, and small pocket pairs. And be willing to coinflip with the shortstacks if the pot odds are in your favor.

And above all, when growing your stack, use aggression to take down pots! Do a lot of (real) raising preflop, and put in c-bets that force stacks to have a solid hand before they call you. You're not c-betting anyone off a flop by throwing a single big blind into the pot.

Read the posts after the hand and am thinking you would suggest I should have went allin on the turn. I was thinking I had the NUTS or I would have. Let me know your thoughts here. Thanks

On hand #15437271626 I think I might have gone AI after the flop but it's doubtful that skunkssabath would have folded.
On hand #15438219470 I would have check/folded. I don't see how you can move 2 people off that flop. I would have laid 44 down preflop due to Gap Concept.

I have to say that I am doing a lot better in these tourneys thanks to the advice that I have received here. I am currently in 1st place with 12 people left. Here is the hand that got me there. I was able to pull this off because I was consistently playing by the suggestions made here. I am pretty sure I was beat.

My call with the small pocket pair here would not be typical but the person who raised was playing any 2 cards all day. I decided I would call and go allin regardless of the flop. It was the right call but I got my typical result.

To be fair I should post it when I suckout. I needed a runner runner suckout on this one but his bet on the turn made me think he didn't hit the Q. The pot was approx 3200 when he bet and there was a potential flush draw he would want to knock off if he paired the Q. At least that's what I was thinking.

Just curious... do you have any idea what place I finished in that tourney? It looks like I moved up in my chipstack from the first hand (which you didn't play awfully, it would've been the same call from that guy either way - tripling the blind or shoving all in, and he's not folding with a draw and an overcard) to the second hand!
Good luck to ya'

Wait, so since there's a flush draw he'd bet his Q, so you check-shove this guy? Don't get the logic behind this play at all. It seems you're playing for stacks way too much with a pocket pair when there's an overcard on the board.

Just one of those thangs. I busted out the other day w/AK on a 3AA flop.
I don't mind the min raises all that much, certainly not with the Kings. At this late stage in a tournament when the blinds are high relative to stack sizes, you'll often see the table fold to any bet. You want to raise, but you don't want to discourage action.

Other than #15438219470 and #15529310879, jstnorv07 played the hands perfectly it seems like. i'm not going to go through all the hands, lets just take the first two he posted with his KK and KJ to prove my point. he min raised and GOT the villain to reraise....that's exactly what i want my opp to do at that point and get all my chips in there w/ the best of it. had he raise standard, maybe the villain will feel that he won't get him to fold or whatever and decide just to fold. 2nd hand...he bets min w/ top pair K kicker and gets the villain to RAISE him w/ 2nd pair (wow!) how awesome is that and gets the rest of his chips in there with the best of it. maybe he'll play the hands differently next time maybe he won't....but most of these examples he showed, he got exactly what he wanted......other than the results.
