This is a discussion on Hands discussion within the online poker forums, in the Tournament Hand Analysis section; 55 of the button arrives in gap, satellite tournament 27 left, itm 25 my position 24 what do you do?:p:p:p
It depends on your stack and others' stacks, but generally I'd shove if you're at 15bb or less. There's a good chance you won't be able to fold into the money if you're 24/27 and this is a solid opportunity to stay afloat by picking up the blinds/antes (and then if you do get called, often flipping to get a pretty much guaranteed seat if you win).
This depends on not only the stack sizes of 26th and 27th place and how small they are, but also your stack size, and I think most importantly what are the stack sizes of the players in the SB and BB? If the BB is a huge stack they will call much more lightly knowing they can probably waltz in to getting a seat even if they call you and lose. I would not want to be going in with 55 knowing there was a good chance I was going to get called and be flipping at best. I would want a high amount of fold equity to do the move. If though, the SB and BB and both shorter stacks or are middle to middle to low stacks then I think this is more of a green light to jam as they will not want to call and potentially lose when they are in position to possibly fold themselves into getting a seat.
As the others have said, the whole set-up with stack sizes and player types behind you is more important here than your actual hand. You dont want to get called, so if there is a fish in the blinds, who dont understand, that he is playing a satellite, and what that means, then I probably just fold and let some other short stack collide with him. Especially if say 20-24 are almost as short as me, while 26-27 are significantly shorter.
This might sound crazy, but I have seen people continue to play poker in the BLAST freerolls on 888 Poker, when they had already secured themselfes a 5$ ticket and had nothing to gain but everything to lose. I have even seen some not get the ticket as a result, because they ran into some kind of cooler situation and could not fold. And if you have such a player in the blinds, then you dont want to jam 55 and get called by his JTs, because he just cant fold and have no clue, whats going on.
If on the other hand the players in the blinds are reasonable and not to deep, then I jam 55 all day and hope to pick up a round of blinds and antes, which will give me a better chance to fold to a ticket.
Not to much info for analysis. It is important also how many chips you and the other 4 players from shorstack had at that point and what position you and they were in. In this case, I am also watching players from another table and on this basis, I make a decision. Sometimes even AA is worth folding down and sometimes playing with each pair. It all depends on the size of the chips, the position and the situation of the others. In general, with low pairs in this situation I prefer preflop open steal push and not call to others AI.
