I reckon the mistake was preflop where it’d be better to 3bet. Then you can have an idea of what kind of hand UTG has and can clear out the BB who could be hitting that flop HARD!

If you are just calling 99 multi-way you are set-mining. If you don't hit your set then get out.

I would also be 3-betting this pre-flop and folding to a 4-bet.

Then we will be heads up on the flop most likely instead of 5-way.

There is a good chance someone hit the 5 here. SB and BB got in to this pot for a very good price.

I agree with both of you - first mistake was not 3-betting. My logic at the time was definitely in set-mining as I anticipated that no one behind me pre-flop would 3-bet.

However, that said, I know better as "hitting the flop" doesn't take any skill and with a hand like 99 - I have to be able to outplay my opponents or fold in sadness because I missed hitting a set.

calling norm for set ~50bb+

3bet bad idei because they will call you with any two and you will play the same vulnarable hand in big pot where with any pair and any draw they will go or rereise allin.

if you want to 3bet you must bet 5x+ bet and much of them also will call you any two but not all as from you normal 3bet.

3bet pockets is good for fold equity and for masking your set but in freeroll they will pay you set if they have something. you dont need to masking.

so play just exploit them. 22-99 pay small as you can to see flop and bet big 78%+ if you catch set. they will pay. if they willnot they dont have even 3rd pair or even run run run draws.

I agree with one poster above. If you just call pre with 99 you are mining. If you don't hit your set on the flop and you get a raise hit the road. If you get a small raise and the board is safe I'd call to see the turn same for the river maybe get lucky and hit your 9. Then again you could be behind from the flop. Someone could've already hit there set.
