Villian Stats (VPIP/PFR/AF): 17/17/2

Villian was short stacked in the BB I was in the BB. Did the standard 3bb raise thinking he would raise or fold. Well he went all in. KQ off is not a hand I win often however I felt he was just shoving with anything. The tourney was about mid to late. About 4 players from the bubble.

Besides the flop and turning being a sick flop (would have been nice to have an A) did I do the correct thing?

Winning Poker, Hold'em No Limit - $4,000/$8,000 ($800 ante) - 5 players

BU: $72,372.00 (9 bb)
SB (Hero): $189,650.00 (24 bb)

Pre-Flop: ($16,000) Hero is SB with Q K

Total pot: $133,032 (Rake: $0)

Showdown:

This seems to be a fine call considering he only had 8bb and after he went all in you had the odds to call with a hand that often has good equity. I also like shoving from the SB rather than raise calling his all-in, because then he is forced to make a decision to call for his tournament life close to the bubble and does not get the opportunity to push all-in over your raise.

QKo is ahead of a lot of his range here. You always have to call.

Before raising, consider that he is shoving about half the time. And I’m not sure what two cards he possibly calls with. Maybe little pair if he’s a total nit?

So your choices are all in (for his stake) or fold. No real reason to raise 3 BB other than to maybe represent something less than you have and bait him to shove you.

You probably DO still shove with QK and he probably still calls. But in other cases, you might get stuff you don’t want to see fold like suited connectors.

You should just shove that hand preflop esp since he has only 8bb that is super short for a mtt and KQ is way too strong to ever fold in that position

I think the play is fine. You did have an opportunity to shvoe there which is probably the best play. However in this exact situation you were getting called w/ 1010 regardless. As Doug Polk says " sometimes it is just your time to die in tournaments".

Raising KQ blind versus blind is always fine and definitely calling the shove here.

But with such a short stack in the BB and being close to the bubble I would prefer to just raise all-in and make them find a hand that can call.

Don't need to sweat the results of the flip too much, just to know how to play your new stack (33bbs or 16bbs) to the best of your abilities.

IMO from SB is OK. In this I play with villain stack AI. From early and middle positions, when this blinds I play x2.2 BB.

Just shove preflop. You want to steal Blind versus Blind when you are both deep stacked or you want to induce the 3bet shove from stacks like around 20ish blinds. Make your game simpler in spots like that which the play is more than standard.

The range you can shove BvB when you have 3x your opponent's stack is way wider than the KQ! Further more sometimes you open even more your range 4 away from the bubble in order to open shove in such spots!

I don't think that he would 3bet shove here for his tournament life against your 3x open raise but ok I don't know the dynamics.

Nothing sick about this hand, except your raise.
