, I got KQs, 3bet, guy calls. Flop K 8 3, 7BB raise, he calls. Turn Q. Another raise for about 13BB, he calls. River 5. I go all in, guy calls with 5 5 in his hand. So he was calling me with 5 5 for half of his stack till the river and he gets a set.
Ok so you got sucked out on but in my opinion you overplayed it significantly.
There is loads of context missing for example what were the stack sizes?, did you have any history on the player? had he seen you 3bet
bluff at any point? what positions were you in?
Based on the way you described the hand he had position on you.
I am going to assume the player wasn't under the gun if you were 3 betting with KQ OOP
It sounds like a blind vs blind or button vs blind hand maybe?
So you 3 bet to 7bb, based on what you said this is early in the tourney so maybe not an unreasonable 3 bet sizing.
When the villain flats your 3 bet what range are you putting him on or are you only thinking about your own hand?
if he is in a late position early in the mtt i would assume A10+ and any pair is a reasonable call, maybe even suited connectors in the hope of flopping a hidden monster especially if he has position on you. If he is in an early position AJ+ and tbf probably most low pairs early in the mtt are probably in his range.
So looking at the flop 2 sets have you crushed (you have a blocker to the other though its still possible) AA has you crushed at that point and AK also has you crushed.
When he flats your bet on the flop did you think about his range? You bet 13bb into a pot of 14 maybe a bit more with any blinds or dead money but I will assume pretty much a pot sized bet? Thats a big chunk of your stack to commit with TP IMO especially on a pretty dry board (there aren't any drawing hands out there).
Turn, 4 possible sets (though you have 2 blockers) and some draws, you didn't say what suit the flop cards were? was there a flush draw out there too?
river pretty much a dead card but adds another set to the possible hands he may hold.
Why did you jam the river? you are only getting called by better especially early in the MTT, you cant win it there and then so don't risk your full stack on 2 pair unless you are 100% you have it. He must have had you covered to bust you. You could have got away with just a check call in this spot if you felt you were ahead and still having a playable stack.
I will occasionally take a line of calling like the villain did against a nit if I can put them on top pair for example, knowing that there is a good chance I will be able to bluff or semi bluff them off later in the hand. The guy probably was a fish but thats exactly what we want. I see so many posts on forums about people wanting to move up to the midstakes from the micros and such to avoid the fish that play any two, but why, this is where we make our money
These are just my thoughts but others may see things differently I would be interested to see if anyone else thinks its over played or how someone else might have played it.
Instead of quitting why not put it chalk it up to being sucked out on, analyse how you played it and maybe get others opinions on the hand ( I am definitely guilty of not doing that enough on here or any other poker forums tbf). Grow as a player and watch your roll grow too. Its a marathon not a sprint.
