Why do different companies run play money and real money? Just read that in terms and conditions. Must be to rip people off?

But what could they possibly gain from this ? I get that people buy play chips from them but even so...to me the variance in real money seems rigged at times , i can recall few games lately where my AK didn't get beat to A x(rags) , or when a pocket pair actually held against 2 overs ...

Timing is part of their trick

I played only Freeroll until I started placing on a regular basis. I figured my skill was improving. Real money the rate of good hands decreased and rate of bad beats increased. I have placed real money tournaments, but if my progress bar is getting close, winning becomes impossible until I deposit again. I even once got my bankroll into the hundreds with a big win in a tournament. Wanted to make a withdrawal, they were having tech issues. I kept playing, couldn’t place for a month, lost it all. It’s timing. They manipulate our perception of winning.

Yup, why on earth would the OP conclude it is to rip off people?

PokerStars understood from the outset that to draw people into poker and expand their business they needed a stream of new players. For many people such as myself, the only way to learn poker was on line with play money before progressing.

I regard this was a wonderful free service on their part for me to gain experience otherwise I would still not be playing, just watching.

Again, why is this seen as a rip off?

In 2021, are there still people playing on starz? It's a mystery to me! A room that does not have a normal rakeback and shares still holds players? Or is it just inertia?

I am just guessing now, but it could be in order to be able to offer play money games in the US while keeping the assets of the real money company out of reach for gready US authorities and judges, who are still trying to rip off pokerstars for past "offenses".

I do not see any kind of fraudulent scheme and connection in games for conditional and real money. Any beginner, including myself, can test their play for play chips. Only after that, having gained confidence and some minimal knowledge, they start playing in micro tournaments:)

To much to lose so I’m sure it’s all legitimate.

I think that there is no scam in poker, but it does exist in bookmakers.

The company americancardroom usually does this, where I block a friend of mine's account to divert his funds, he sent an email claiming everything else and the company didn't even care, I think it's unfortunate that a company of this size does this to its customers, he never got his money back or had access to it.
AMERICANCARDROOM IS A FRAUD.

Some sites offer the play money option to recruit new players who don't know how to play and need to gain knowledge without losing real money. Playing for real money from the moment you start to learn the basics is without a doubt a way to scare people away from the tables. The more players that join the world of poker, the better it will be for everyone who plays, whether for fun or for a profession.
