My husband and I just got back from a two month trip to Colorado. We had not intended to stay so long, but we found a great money making opportunity at the Midnight Rose Poker room.

But first, an over view of the poker situation in CC. Dismal!!! When we there there a few years ago there were several options. Cold Creek and Buffalo Billy's both had poker rooms. both have closed due to the downtown in the economy. Wildwood still has a poker room, but they are open only on Th, Fr, Sat., and Sunday. And seldom more than one table open, and usually, no table at all. Wildwood is unplayable, however, because of the unbearable noise from the rest of the casino. There is a constant slot payout noise playing at high decibel. I really think it is a piped in noise to cause a feeling of excitement in the slot players. We even bought ear plugs at Wal-mart, and still the noise was intolerable.

That left the Midnight Rose poker room as the only viable poker alternative in Cripple Creek. Starting in April they discontinued the bad beat jackpot. Instead they give $100 to the high hand every hour. On weekends there are four hours each day it goes to $250. They will continue this until the bad beat money is used up. We found this to be much better than a bad beat that only may hit once every six months and then benefit only one table. We hope to get back there before the promotion ends.

We started when the poker room opened every day, 10am. There would usually be only one table (they are feeling the bad economy also). by noon maybe another table would open. Several times one table was all they had all day!! On weekend evenings there may be 3 or 4 tables. And we DID rake in the high hand bonuses!! By the time we left we had made over $4000 in bonuses only.

We played a two to ten spread limit game. If a second table opened it would usually be a 1, 2 blind to 100 spread limit. We never felt comfortable playing that. Unfortunately, we both lost a bit on table play, But the perks and bonuses more than made up for it. Ok, I'll be honest, I lost $200 over the 2 months, spouse lost $900.

Other perks are Mon, Tues, and Wed, play 3 hours and get a free room. The room comes with $20 in food coupons. There is a poker menu with cheep cheep great food, the players card pays $1 an hour and paid for all the food we ate.

The main reason we extended our stay was that on Sept 14 there was a $10,000 free roll for the players with the most hours in the last three months. Unfortunately, neither of us placed in that, but with all the bonus money in our pockets, we left for home very happy.

I also have family in the area; my son lives in Denver.

Glad to have you back, Ruth. FunSeeker was just asking about you.

We have not been there this year. I am missing it as I swelter in this Texas heat. If you play 3 hours of poker you get a rate of $45, or did last summer anyway. And of course M, T, and W would be free. Make your reservations first, to make sure you have space, then play and ask for a voucher from the pit boss.

Sure thing. Coushatta poker room is where we are spending 0ne week of each month this year. Would prefer cripple Creek, but it is so far.

The room in Kinder is very nice, You get one dollar of food comp for every hour of play. With two of us playing, that is plenty to feed us. Sandwiches at the Grand Cafe are so big that one half each is plenty, so that is lunch and dinner. Once you are in the system, you will get a monthly newsletter offering you a free room, go with a spouse and you each get the offer. Actually, we don't use those, cause once you have gone a few times and have a track record, you can call the casino host and ask for a room comp. they give us four nights every time I ask. I don't know if it could be more.

If you can go on Mon thru Thurs, the poker room has hourly promotions worth $100 or more. High hand, or AA cracked. There are never more than three tables, so chances of a win are good. We are going the 20th thru the 23rd this month. The picture is my husband and I, say Hi if you see us.

Thanks for the review, Ruth. I'm in Arvada now scouting out the Cripple Creek poker scene, and it was nice to find your review on the web. I called WildWood to get some information, but the manager on duty there wasn't much help, and not really a poker guy oddly enough.

Called Midnight Rose and the poker room mgr was very helpful. The Saturday $100 tourney at 5:30pm, 20k starting stack, seems like a reasonable deal. Not sure what the structure is like, but he said the blind levels start at 20 mins and increase up to 40 mins as the tourney progresses. They used to give chip bonuses to players who played cash games before the tourneys, but that was discontinued due to regulations.

Here's a link to their site: http://www.triplecrowncasinos.com/poker

if you're in arvada, why not just go up to blackhawk/central city? closer drive and many poker options there and lots of tourneys happening with ppl in them. they host the colorado poker open which happens in aug or sept i think and that brings some really high roller tourneys.

Wildwood is not a great place to play poker. Last time I was there they only played on Thursday thru Sunday. The problem to most players is that the room is not separated with a wall from the noisiest casino I have ever been in!! I play there when the contests are big enough to be a factor, I use ear plugs and even so the noise volume gives me a headache.

Thanks for the Blackhawk room reviews, Jilly. I will check out the CO Poker Open and may play something. My friend and host prefers not to play at Blackhawk because it's a bit too close to home and could affect his work situation, but I will drive out there myself in August for a look.
