Hi

partypoker has recently updated its software. To me it looks like a big improvement and more closely resembles pokerstars. However while making a "smoother blind structure" with more gradual increments they have also seemed to make all their tournaments a very fast blind strtucture. Despite the feel being lot better this has started to put me off the site. I am having diffulty finding tournament where the blinds do not increase every 4 minutes or quicker. What are your views on this?

Just played one at PartPoker with 2 minute level. It did play pretty smoothly and I have to say I enjoyed it and cashed. Normally I would hate these. However I hit multiple good hands early and built a stack early which meant I had a big stack and a lot of blinds to play with. It is weird looking at the site now though when all the increments look very short for all the tournaments.

You have to look at the blind structure, not at how long blinds are, in order to find out smoothness.
For example, lets take any Bounter Hunter on party poker and Bounty Builder on Pokerstars. So for Party it's 5 minute levels and 100k starting stack which equals 100 big blinds. While for Pokerstars it's 7 minutes blinds (after 16 level it's 8 minutes), 5000 starting stack (166 big blinds). So it looks like Pokerstars' tournament is "slower" and smoother?

However, after 1st hour of play the starting stack on Party equals 62 big blinds, while the starting stack on Pokerstars after 1st hour equals 41 big blinds. After 2nd hour, the starting stack on Party will mean you have 24 big blinds, while registering this late to Pokerstars' Builder will give you only...... 8 big blinds!!! So you still think Party doesn't have a smooth structure?? (all my counting is a bit rough, one can check for themselves more precisely).

Very good response iwont20! I do actually prefer having more increments and think PartyPoker is indeed a smoother structure. It is only the speed of which they go up I did not like but as you have clearly stated the 4 minute blinds in PartyPoker actually leaves you with more blinds than Pokerstars 5 minute blind structure after an hour of play so you need to look at more than simply the increment speed. I have been meaning to sit down and work this out.

For me though I generally prefer 10 minute blind structures on Pokerstars. I play speed satellites as turbos seem to dominate most satellites but for the main tournament I like to play slower blinds most of the time. I need to do a comparison though as you have above with the 10 minute blinds for Pokerstars with the 4 minute ones on PartyPoker and see how they compare to each other.

Yep, you were right with further breakdown:-

Party Poker (5 minute blinds)
After 1 hour blinds 800/1600 200 5 minute blinds 100,000 starting stack 62.5 blinds left m 25
After 3hours 6000/12000 1,5000 100,000 starting stack 8.33 blinds left m 5.13

Pokerstars (10 minute blinds)
After 1 hour 60/120 15 5,000 starting 41.67 blinds m 16.67 (m adjusted to 8 person tables)
After 3 hours 700/1400 175 blinds left 3.57 m1.42

So despite the blinds going up twice as quick on PartyPoker you do have a better stack to blinds ratio on PartyPoker, going to have to keep plugging away there!

Hey I'm glad you've found my post useful. I just want to add to avoid any misconceptions that my post was not to make it look like PS structures are surely bad compared to PP (I don't know whether it's true, although I like Party way more). I just wanted to pay attention to details and to tell not to judge the book by its cover. As we see PP structure is better for an early stage, but it might not be the case for later stages, bubble, final table. I haven't compare it like that, especially considering that on PS a lot of tournaments have progressive blind levels. I've read somewhere that you have to pay attention to how long it takes for a big blind to double, so it will mean how often you have to double in order to keep you stack the same size in big blinds. Hope it will be helpful.
Good luck to you all in your tournaments :)

It was most definitely helpful and got me to sit down and do a proper comparison. It was scary to see most tournaments with a 3-4 minute blind structure but as you say don't judge a book by its cover! In general it looks like you get more play and I generally like longer tournaments. In contrast I have noticed 888 have a lot of tournaments with a fairly slow increase time wise say 8 minutes but because of the way jump up you get a lot less play. I need to play more on PartyPoker as I do like the site and the fact that they allow you to see stack size in amount of blinds rather than chip value is really handy.

Thanks again and good luck to you.
