The ponsi scheme by full tilt poker, when it came to light that they did not have player funds separated from company funds, and could not payout 100% of all players balance. Basically they were paying out cashouts with other players deposits, until it came to a head. and they ran out of $$$.
The US prosecuted the founders of pokerstars, FullTilt Poker and absolute poker/ultimatebet, and basically made it unlawful to accept payments online for the act of gambling. So all the big name poker rooms pulled out in hopes of 1 day in the future returning.
In the settlement, Pokerstars bought Fulltilt and payed out all remaining balances owed to players.

Many were superusers and some of the company staff would cheat. These types of businesses are all gone though. US Legislation also affected gambling. Less people started to play once it became harder to deposit with credit cards. The american online poker player has it a little bit harder than the rest of the world.
