Sorry, but it just ain't gonna happen. There is a vert strong religious lobby in America that is dead set against it.

Religious Moral Authority doesn't hold the sway you think it does in the USA. These days it is more associated with debauchery than moral correctness.

The perception of moral authority, and the fear of backlash by that bogus religious lobby are what drive some politicians to make stupid laws and regulations.

Those gullible assholes are the real problem. That would be gullible politicians way more than gullible folks of religion. I won't try to deny anyone's right to practice a faith as long as it doesn't infringe on my rights to not practice one.

They are a distraction. The fear of them is the problem.

I'm getting tired of waiting. I might move on to cribbage with my other old friends.

The topic is deep as a well, depends on the country, but won't on the world. It is so stupid, politicians can't count, they lost tazex, we must hide with playing poker, without sense.

wishful thinking

its simple....if the government can find a way to tax it....and make sure they aren't getting screwed by the sites...it would already be legal again :)

If online poker had even just the potential to match the revenues weed is producing, we would have been there already I'm sure.

Alas, just no money in it

It would seem like there is money in it. Low overhead. You just need a few servers. You can buy a software package for the site. If it was legal, I could run a poker room from my home.

If you put a heavy tax (ie. 20%) I would think the gov would make money.

Most existing efforts have failed, largely because someone thinks they are a special interest and want it to work for them, and not for the players.

Perhaps we can rethink that.......hmmmm petition time?

hah!

Tried that in Washington State. Wrote the petition, filed with the Secretary of State's office, got an official ballot title ......

problem is you need (in WA) to collect a thousand signatures a day for nine months, and there weren't five players willing to gather signatures, and nobody interested in supporting (with $$) a petition drive. It died on the vine.

It costs a minimum of $1.2 million to successfully get an initiative on the ballot. I wish this were the best way to go, but for our cause, it simply isn't

I think they will legalize poker in united states when big casinos join the online world. they have too much poker and do not want there business to be hurt. I do not know what's holding them back to pressure the government to legalize poker.

casinos don't make large sums of money from poker. they are not interested in poker only, so in order to get poker they need to get slots and blackjack too, or they are not interested.

Live casinos would probably prefer to do away with live poker. From a $/sq ft POV, poker is probably less valuable than the free buffets! The fees and/or rake cover the cost of spreading the games, but more slots would make them more money per square foot over the long run.

This is why some casinos should back online poker. They can drop many of the live tables, and instead focus on events, tied in with online satellites.

Cardrooms are a bit different. They grew up figuring out out to make a profit at small margins. They tend to cater to a fixed audience, unlike the whole city of Las Vegas, which is highly dependent on 'visitors', and conventioneers.

The co-operation between B&M rooms and OLP seems so natural I am surprised there is any resistance. Greedy outside interests is the problem IMO.

Somehow, the whole US decided 4 or 5 decades ago to let Native American Tribes get into gaming as a Unique Legal Entity. They took that to mean they had some sort of authority to 'control' gaming even outside their jurisdictions.

I have never figured that logic out. But here in the States, it looms large. And for me, in California, it is the paramount obstruction to the legislation necessary to get the consumer protections we Ca poker players want.

Those California tribes have probably saved Las Vegas and all of Nevada from fading away by resisting those big Casino entities from establishing themselves in Ca. And they have resisted hard.

OMG. I didnt know it was ilegal in américa. Does it include south américa? What if I won Money. Am I wasting my time playing póker online? . Now, I am really confused. Please, somebody explain me. Thanks.
The encouraging news for poker is to look for in other continents. Legalization of online poker for residents of the United States (who are banned from playing with the rest of the world after Black Friday) in 2021 went at a good pace. We wrote about the background and the first positive steps in detail a year ago:
Since then, the U.S. market has only grown:

Connecticut became the seventh U.S. state to legalize online poker (and there were only four from 2011-2020)
BetMGM (partypoker) broke the monopoly of pokerstars in Michigan by capturing 30% of the market in a year, and has successfully launched in Pennsylvania and New Jersey https://new-jersey-online-gambling.com/casinos .

Run It Once Poker was sold by Phil Galfond for $5.8 million and could make money as early as 2022 in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Michigan
A separate story is the possibility of merging same-branded rooms from different states into a single pool. The main obstacle to this obvious and desirable measure for many years was the infamous The Wire Act, a law in place since 1961 that prohibits the transfer of information about betting and betting between states. Although American courts of different levels have repeatedly ruled that poker is not affected by the Wire Act, there is no final clarity on the matter. The law hurts the development of the industry quite badly: many companies offer betting and casinos along with poker, and the potential benefits from the common pool do not compensate for the losses from gambling and betting.

I think they will never legalize poker, especially all over the world. It is not beneficial for the government when you play in a poker room that is not registered in this country. The poker room is usually registered in an offshore zone and does not pay taxes to the country. This is not economically beneficial to the state.

about 10 years ago Barona Casino in San Diego ,CA , native american managed, had an online poker site that ran quite smoothly. it had great graphics and seemingly functional code . they offered only freeroll tournaments for players that accumulated hours in the live casino poker room , and paid out in 'free ante ' chips , food comps , buffet offers, gift cards , etc, redeemable at the poker room cashier cage . the idea ,of course ,involved getting the jump on the California online poker industry, by having an established, running , complaint free site . after a couple of years , as it became clear the state likely had no plans to open a legalized and regulated online market, the native americans closed the site up . i felt devastated, as i had done quite nicely getting promos ! sadly , the brick and mortar Barona poker room ( my favorite in San Diego County ) also didnt last, since the coronavirus pandemic shut out any live action for almost 18 months . it never reopened.

never.all the big goverments want taxes out of it.which would make it unprofitible for most players paying rake and taxes on it.
