As legal online poker seems to languish on the sidelines, the growth of sports betting across the US of A appears unfettered which is confusing to say the least. In fact the last five years following a Supreme Court decision have been responsible for the biggest boom in US gambling history.

Eric Lipton, an investigative reporter for the New York Times wrote a series called 'A Risky Wager' which he details here on NPR's Fresh Air podcast.

Fascinating listening as Lipton explains how the industry made inroads via Daily Fantasy Sports to then full blown sports betting. That said, Lipton then traces the massive lobbying involved and the fact (using Kansas as an example) promises made about individual states benefiting from the taxes raised is rarely born out in reality. Additionally, to date any number of promotional schemes (free bets to join a platform) have led to widespread gambling issues.

Sports betting has been big in the us for over a century. Now that the government says it is legal, it is now being recognized how much people wager.

I remember when 'Draft Kings' began. It was shortly after Black Friday. It seemed like many of the US online players (on p5's) were getting into it.

Isn't it time they re-assess the online poker situation in the states?

Now that the huge political donor, CEO, chairman, & founder of LasVegas Sands has died...
It is so backward arse thinking too... imo having online poker (world wide) available will actually help to fill large tournament series (b&m) not the other way around. Why not figure a method of small taxation of deposits &/or the same for withdrawals over a certain amount per month (or whatever). For now, there's lost revenue & unhappy people. (& yet sports betting is running rampant and where I live you see tv commercials for online 'casino' sites constantly << which as far as I'm concerned, shouldn't be allowed). But it'd be like trying to tell a rigtard it's not rigged.

For the majority of us who don't understand how to exploit the sports betting markets, betting on sports is just another drain to pour our had earned cash down.
When I took sports betting seriously the amounts I wagered were far greater than that on poker. Luckily for me I saw sense and pulled out of sports betting while I was still slightly ahead. I have a friend who couldn't control his betting and ended in jail for a few years after being convicted for fraud.
The companies that set sports bets always set the odds in their favor and if you happen to be a winner, they will eventually ban you.
They are only interested in the suckers who unknowingly keep accepting bad odds.
The American government probably is able to tax sports betting, doing so on poker sites is maybe too hard for taxes to be extracted. I sure that if the U.S. could tax poker more easily it would be legal.
