Recently, news broke that a fraudster or team of fraudsters was using stolen data to create bogus online poker accounts then proceed to steal money from players' bank accounts. They were able to utilize a VIP Preferred deposit method which is owned by Global Payments. It has also been discovered that fraudulent activity has been active at DraftKings, BetMGM and wsop.com.

The scam has been happening since October 12, 2022.

Find more details in the article linked below.

Thanks for the news, Shelley! 🥰
It's terrible that this is happening, and it's a pity that it affected the fans of this beautiful game.😔

Yes, poker rooms warn customers about the need to be vigilant, but I would like to know more about what measures were taken by poker rooms that were attacked by scammers.
Can customers be calm about their bills by following the recommendations listed in the article?
Will they strengthen the security measures of poker rooms that have not yet been affected by this problem?

This is one of the perils of unregulated sites and the deposit methods needed to curcumvent in this case US legislation. In countries, where online poker is legal and regulated, we can just deposit with our credit cards or by direct bank transfer, which is quite a lot safer :)

The part from the article (shown above) is stating that the customers were compromised while on other sites (this is where the fraudsters obtained the info. ).

Idk🤷‍♀️, But it can be double or triple (if there is one😅) authentication when logging in from a new device. I don't really understand mechanisms but maybe they could strengthen the protection for logging in from new devices.🤷‍♀️

Except that it is happening at the 'LEGAL' US poker sites.

In any case, in my opinion, it's great to give recommendations and conduct an investigation, of course, but it would be nice if they also did something, for their part. 🤷‍♀️

By the way, I usually use (or rather used) a separate card for making deposits: I have a card that I use for transactions on the Internet (there are never any funds on it, since I put funds on it only to pay for something). I don't know how effective it is, but, as always, I do everything not like normal people.😬🤪

One of my all time grievances against the Government involvement in everything. IF the U.S. allowed all States to play online poker, people would not be forced to take chances. I live in Pa. so I can play on PokerStarsPA and use paypal (there are other ways) but the point is I do not have to transfer to crypto and back to cash. Instead the U.S. Government does not do what most people want, they have been serving the special interest of Casino owners who do not want people to play poker/ gamble online. They want people to be forced to show up at the Casino's where they can apply all kinds of tricks to drain a customer's wallet. :devilish:

I would have thought the banks and the authorities would be able to put a stop to this, trace the crooks and bag them but they never seem to be able to, which is surprising because in the UK you need ID to open a bank account.

It's reverse in my case, I lost money with Jokerstars, never had problems of this kind on the unregulated sites I use.
Maybe it's because I'm not leaving any sensitive info about me on unregulated ones.

Thank you very much for letting us all know I literally hadn’t heard anything about this 🫢😮 it really truly is scary what people are able to do with todays technology, on one hand it’s great for poker as a whole that technology has moved on so fast but very very scary 😢 it makes your actually think twice about signing up to these places and entrusting your details to these companies 😞 it’s a real shame that the minority ruin things for the majority

Much love and thanks again

Just wow. Its really sad though. You would think this would have been more known by now and this is the 1st I heard about it. Glad I cant play those sites. This is also why I would only use a credit card to make any deposits. Would rather pay the extra fees and be safe.

can't use a credit card to deposit where I live :( (unless it's one of those mastercard 'giftcard' ones and even with those they have changed it so you can only deposit a maximum of $75 Cdn. even if using a $200 card)

This didn't happen because people used a credit card. It appears to be a leak from a third party payment processor/KYC verification that sites like WSOP, BetMGM, DraftKings etc use..

These sites use a third party system where the process is streamlined by saving our KYC information as well as our banking info so we don't have to fill it out again or wait for the verification process to complete. So we can get to funding ASAP.

So if someone has access to this processor (Therefore our information) they can target those who have used ACH transfers by creating phony accounts at one of the many legal gambling sites in our names and the payment processor fills out the ACH transfer for them taking the money directly from the victims bank account. They then set up a couple fake Venmo or cash App in the victims name and withdraw the money from the gambling site and transfer it to an account they control and can access the money.

-------------------------------

I actually received an email from both DraftKings and BetMGM as I'm sure everyone with an account with them did saying "You may have heard about (this incident)" then telling me I can protect my account by adding/using 2FA and to change my passwords. Seems pretty misleading when the problem isn't with already created accounts we control, it's accounts we never created.

I use 2 way verification to get into my accounts , often needing to input a code sent to me too. Can be a hassle or inconvenience but keeps theft much les s likely. Any new computer used needs to be approved. Would highly recommend everyone taking added measures to keep themselves safe.
