Almost 50 percent of women surveyed in the UK have played poker, but nearly a third are discouraged from playing because of men. According to a new survey conducted by 888 Holdings, it suggests that some women in poker are very aware of and conscious of playing against men.

The survey is by no means a reflection of all women in poker or, indeed, men. The vast majority of males would welcome women to the table if asked. But, in regards to the survey results, does this really surprise anyone?

The only news here seems to be that the pokerworld is in steep competition. It becomes harder and harder to find actually paying customers, and now they are turning towards women to maintain profit. But it's not that easy. Poker is like smoking - either you become hooked before a certain age or you don't start at all.

Playing online at 888 Poker, I met many girls at the tables. A girl can be identified by the player's nickname or avatar. I have repeatedly fallen into well-placed traps. Girls play poker as well as men. Girls ' logical thinking differs from men's. And this brings the girls to the top of the mountain. Poker does not distinguish which gender a player is. We (the players) must distinguish and find out.

Interesting survey.

Sadly, I think it's guys being guys (when grouped together in any activity) and will be for the near future unless it's drummed into all and sundry that casually intimidating people -because they can and are allowed to- is bad for business. Vanessa Kade's excellent comment under the article is completely on point.

The poker industry falls short in attracting two segment areas yet claims it is constantly looking to expand the base. The first is with female players (doh) and the second with what could loosely be termed seniors (as in the poker and golf definition of over 50).

The women's issue is just confounding and so utterly short sighted- half the population?- but you seldom hear of anything seriously being undertaken to address it.

The reason I invariably bring up the 'senior player' issue is because it frames the inadequate marketing efforts of the industry. Picture all those millions of middle class, successful people around the world who, every weekend, indulge themselves in some expensive pursuits. Travelling, golf, yachting, dining, spas etc. Each one is a drain on finances yet money well spent with no expectation of any ROI.

Now, find a creative way to pitch them poker. These are intelligent people who are successful, ambitious so appeal to their ego. Come play a competitive, skillful game and hopefully end the weekend with a wad of cash in your pocket.

Seems like a no brainer to me.

Poker For People

Hi,
The topic seems to be very interesting. While playing online at Spartan Poker, I have seen a lot on women at tables. They can be identified by their name. I have repeatedly fallen into well-placed traps. Girls play poker as well as men. Girls ' logical thinking differs from men's. And this brings the girls to the top of the mountain. Poker does not distinguish which gender a player is. :2in1:

Basing conclusions on a survey of 2,000 women from a national population of 33,838,775 women, which is then within a global population of about 3.7 billion seems like a rather broad stroke to me..

It would be foolish to argue against there being a current disparity, of course, that much is obvious.

If I were a CEO of a large poker company I wouldn't be rushing to make any hasty decisions based on results from an infinitesimal sample size.

By the way, I aspire towards feminism and truly believe that the faster we have more female world leaders, the quicker our global situation improves.

Men are, generally speaking, not equipped to make rational, philanthropic decisions which effect entire populations of people.

Men are better equipped for smashing things with rocks, and that's about it...

This squirrel would be the first to welcome a complete political gender role-reversal and for humanity to become a matriarchal society.

It would do everyone and everything (except the male ego), the world of good.

I have to agree there is a big gender bias. I disliked the other day when somebody looked me up here at cardchat and knew my gender. I thought about changing it to show male... When it is known you are female you have seem to get a lot of wild action and reraises when playing live. Ironically, you probably get less action and reraises online if known female. Perhaps this is because women have more pantomimes than men and if you keep pressure on they will accidentally send a tell? I don't know... I prefer online anyway.
