Wishful thinking. I don't think people are going to be interested in playing a dirty game with people so close to them for awhile. Even once the casinos do reopen, there's going to be a long process to get back to normal.

Exactly. I would be surprised if they played any of these events. It is all too risky to play during a time like this. Best to just wait till next year or reschedule it somehow till later in the year if there is any way to do so.

I think that if they had to decide now, they'd really have no choice but to cancel. So personally I like the wait-and-see approach as there's some chance that things have calmed down enough the series will be able to go on like normal as of late May / early June.

Anyway, fingers crossed!

The outlook for the WSOP in the live area doesn’t look good. I can’t imagine the series not being postponed or canceled. What I can see is more online tournaments instead. Possible that they play most of the series or maybe even it’s entirety with online events.

When it comes to deciding whether to cancel or postpone, because they can wait, they will wait. This isn't the Olympics with a couple of billion dollars in new infrastructure and thousands of finely honed athletes answering to over a hundred national sports committees. This is a few thousand independent poker players who have to travel to Vegas and willingly pay hundreds to tens of thousands of dollars to share germs with thousands of others.

As for the popularity of big live events, the WSOP should refund entry fees ASAP once a postponement or cancellation is on the horizon. The way the first big event plays out after the actual "Crisis"* situation has abated will have a huge ripple effect on the short term future of this kind of event.

*This assumes that the crisis will abate without the total collapse of the World Economy.:(

It's just poker, they can wait until the end of the year, let's say the danger is over in October/November . But the problem will be the economy , especially internationally it will be difficult to travel this year for many people.

They should do the right thing and re-schedule it now. Having more than one month to work out travel arrangements is really required. Airlines are flexible now regarding cancellations, but they may not be come May.

We do not know what will happen in the next next month and a half. Exactly what metric could they use to feel good about holding the schedule? Will they hold the WSOP if less than 1000 people in the US are dying per day? What about 500 per day?

There is also an image and perception problem. Maybe this doesn't matter, but if they continue as planned now, I would personally have the opinion that they didn't really care about the people. Maybe they don't.

Let's tentatively hold it in Sept/Oct.

Yes

Yes, I heard they were going to wait a while longer before a decision. I am afraid the WSOP will be cancelled till next year.

agreed but honestly I can't see how it would ever be possible to run it in June this year.... 'Unless'... they got organized immediately, teamed up with say partypoker and made this available to all players worldwide, with USA players welcome and having their deposits taxed to simplify the taxation situation. Then have ALL the events online. Another 'BOOM' perhaps :D:confused::D (wishful thinking by me... but I think about as likely as the WSOP live events kicking off this summer)

The WSOP in 2020 at its usual time in the summer is not going to happen. Hotel resorts on the strip aren't even accepting reservations for awhile now. Vegas is one of the cities in the US that isn't as big as some of the hot spots in the nation yet has a crisis on par with those big cities. Plus, I feel it's rather irresponsible for the organizers to postpone the inevitable and put those people trying to stay optimistic and plan their lives to travel out there to be in limbo only for a late decision.

I think the WSOP 2020 will be rescheduled for fall or the end of the year. Most are afraid to come. One way or another, we are waiting for an official statement. They can do it online or something else, but it will be stupid. Planners are already calculating their expenses and are thinking about how to minimize losses, and contributions should be returned to people.

Completely agree with you. They have the choice to wait it out as it is not something that is in dire need to happen at the exact time that it is planned. With major sports postponing instead of cancelling, I believe the WSOP should do the same and postpone until the fall or late summer.

Seems to me more people agree that the WSOP will either be postponed for autumn or canceled.

Nearly every other major sporting event or large gathering scheduled for the next few months, has been cancelled. But organizers of the 2020 WSOP say they’ll wait until May to make a decision whether the series is a go or not. Would you like to know now? Or does it really matter to you when the 2020 WSOP announces their intentions?

WSOP Last Upcoming Major Event in the US That Hasn’t Been Canceled, Planners Still Holding Out Hope
Why not hold the Wsop online? This was convenient for many players until the epidemic was over

That's a very good point about holding it online. For sure there would be fewer players and it would be a smaller series, but if the alternative is to cancel it completely for the year, I think the online option could have nice potential as a backup.

This makes me wonder (thinking out loud)- if the WSOP and the powers that be, were to move the tournament entirely online, could there be more potential for more entries? for every game? Mind you, not everyone is able to play at WSOP.com from the comfort of their home for real money.

It doesn’t matter to me as I wouldn’t be going anyways. Besides not having the necessary funds, I don’t think I’d be allowed to travel there from Newfoundland.

That said, I can’t see how they would be able to go ahead with it. You are in extreme proximity to the other players and changing chips frequently. (Unless you’re me and you just lose them, then you don’t have to worry ). They should just announce it now so players can make other plans for that time.

I was thinking the same.

Especially for the people from not so big and developed countries... :(

If they bring it online to WSOP.com , it will only be for US players . They might as well just cancel it.
