I have been playing way too much poker lately and have had less than stellar results. I think it's time for a week or 2 week deloading phase. Has anyone had experience with feeling like it was too much and they needed to take a step back? I still really enjoy learning but playing for some reason has just been annoying lately. bankroll has stayed about the same. I have noticed mentally I've gone more on tilt than usual leading to some questionable play. Other than that.... I think just a little break would be nice.

What has been your experiences from taking a little time off?

I believe everyone needs to find what works for them, but, that said, I personally do not really take any breaks.

I believe in battling through the downturns and the negative feelings that can develop. My rationale is this - they are going to happen regardless and they are going to occur with some frequency. That is poker. I believe you can't really progress unless you accept the nature of the beast.

Fedor Holz gave a list of his top tips for playing and his second tip was 'Be a Better Loser'

"I really believe that this is one of the most underrated things that people don't work on: being better losers...I think really dealing with losing all the time is just part of the game"

As Holz says it is part of the game.

Now, that is not to say developing a skin thick enough to deal with it is easy. But, bear in mind no professional player, not the best in the world have avoided hitting serious downturns.

So I get angry and frustrated in a contained manner, I do not pretend I am 'zen' to anyone, least if all myself - but I play through it and try to play at least some poker everyday.

'Be a Better Loser'

I really like this. I think it's more or less that I've been grinding so damn much lately there's something more relaxing to me to watch other people play and talk out loud through their choices. Maybe that's it. Plus work has been way on overload lately so there's that ha. Maybe I just need to work less and play poker more . :icon_sant

You're right . You always need to monitor your progress and draw conclusions on time. I don't play as much as you, so I haven't had these problems.

Its pretty much never a mistake to take a break from the game. A growth mindset and interest in the game are needed to play at your best.

It's hard to get to the perfect place, mrc1988, and as Holz says, it needs to be worked on!

One of the key problems is having to battle yourself mentally to find a 'balanced' state.

On the one hand you want to approach the felt/keyboard in an intense and focused manner for each and every session you play. BUT. When it all goes pear shaped somehow have the mental capacity to instantaneously let it all go, shake it off.

Which is why I'll joke about not being Zen about it all. I was never the throw a mouse against the wall type but I have worked hard at taking a beat but staying focused. That's all you can do, learn to overcome the hurdles.

Good luck with the work/play balance!

If you think you need a break then you need a break.

When I take time off from online poker I try to do things that are completely unrelated to online poker.

Such as travel - errands - extra work shifts - visiting and reaching out to friends and family - other sports, etc.

When I feel I am tired, lost a large sum of money, and not comfortable to play I will take a break. If you play in a bad mood, you will lose more than you can win. Taking a break will help me refresh my mind and my health.

I constantly take breaks when I feel like I'm out of my game plan.

I take breaks all the time. Consider semi-break as playing only freerolls. It always helps.

Yes, take the time out. I do that too from time to time. It can definitely raise your game again and bring it to a better level. During the downtime, I wouldn't even think about poker. Take care of other things. Go out meet friends. After 1 or 2 weeks you are mentally recovered and can start playing again.

The smarted play you can make when your not feeling it is to take a break. It could be a down turn or just not 100% interested in the game but if your not 100% into the game its a losing propitiation. As for me I take a week or so off every so often and the longest was for a month. Every time I came back and was ready to roll.

If your "A" game is better than your competition's "A" game then hang in there and grind it out.

If you're playing folks that are getting lucky and you can understand when they're getting lucky on you and it doesn't tilt you, then grind it out. There is software and poker odds calculators to help you with that one.

Now imagine having that feeling but you're dependent on poker to pay your utilities, rent/mortgage and whatever expenses you can come up with!!! Only reason to log in or show up at the casino at that point is if you're a professional trying to get your hourly rate.

If you cringe at opening your online poker game or you just don't want to play and you're not a professional player then just stop playing! lol
