i was playing a low level ring game prior to a tournament and witnessed a guy give terrible abuse to one of the players sitting at the table. After a while i asked what was his problem with this guy and he replyed it was ok this guy was a robot,a program and he like abusing him.I asked him more questions about this robot which he replyed that at off peak times paradise poker puts on robots to keep the numbers up at the low level tables, sure enough the robot bet or folded at the same speed all the time most of the time it was a fold if he bet then he always had a good hand he never spoke or reply to gestures.not sure if what the guy was telling me was completly true so i wondered can anybody enlighten me. thank you

Sorry for the slight derail, but...

My girlfriend and I discussed whether or not having functional poker 'bots would count as passing the Turing Test ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turing_test for those of you who aren't as geeky as I ).

Of course, a program running simply "by the book" wouldn't count here. Any computer program can follow simple instructions; making a straight limit bot is a relatively simple task. Hell, even making a WINNING straight limit bot is relatively simple, but that says more about the competition at low limits than it does about the genius of the programmers.

Still, having a program accurately (or, perhaps, sometimes not so accurately) determine when to bluff, when its been outdrawn, when the opponent is bluffing... At no-limit... Poker, in this sense, is humanity in a nutshell. You should be consistent, but not too consistent. You should do the right thing, but sometimes in different ways. You should adapt to the situation.

Food for thought!

Anyway, sorry for the derail. Resume!

Paradise poker using bots????????? During real money RING GAMES! Had not heard this about Paradise I shall investigate!
This is Paradise's Terms of Service:
Artificial Intelligence

The use of Artificial Intelligence or "bots" is strictly forbidden. The company will take measures to prevent and detect the use of programs that are designed to enable artificial intelligence (non-human) to play on the site.

I will continue to look into it but I seriouslly doubt Paradise uses bots in their real money games

not that i exactly believe it either, but that is sort of vague language, suggesting more to me that they don't allow their players to use bots, not that the site it's self doesn't use them. though maybe i'm reading it wrong

by the way, interesting point Mr. F Paulsson. now you got me thinking about it. can see both sides

Yeah Nate I thought the same thing about the vagueness of the language..... gonna email Paradise's support just to see what they say although I really do doubt they use bots there. I might of course be biased I have grown to really like Paradise.

Hello,

Thank you for your e-mail. At Paradise we use all of the means available to us to try to detect and ban the use of bots at our tables. We neither have our own player nor our own bots playing at the tables.

Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance. Regards,

Samuel

Hello I have run across a post in the forum I moderate for and wanted to ask you if Paradise Poker uses any programs to “auto-play” or more commonly known as “bots” at its tables. I saw in your terms and conditions you don’t allow players to use them, but I was just curious as to whether or not Paradise Poker uses them. Here’s a link to the thread if you are interested https://www.cardschat.com/t62567-.html Thanks in advance Don aka xdmanx007

the names of these bots are woody from dunwoody
vecky from dunwoody
they have another two with more sophisticated names but always from dunwoody.
the person giving me the information was,nt clear if they were paradise,s or some account holder,s.

i play at 2.00pm gmt and the low level ring games are pretty low on traffic.I have sat many times with this guy woody and witnessed the same type of play always folding or calling bets straight away and at the same time intervals, never replying to speech and almost always folding to a bet.He never wins much nor drops by a couple of dollars so for a bot he aint that profitable.

Interesting that they all come from the same place and lets be honest the site is not going to tell you if they run their own bots are they? Can't say that i'm bothered either way as bots can't play n/l hold-em to any standard.

QUOTE]

I don't understand this? Are you saying those are the user names, cos they are much too long aren't they? Also, if a site was using bots they wouldn't use the same name surely?

I wouldn't assume that someone who didn't respond to chat was a bot, there are other explanations - they've got chat turned off, they don't speak english, or they just cant be bothered to respond. I've never noticed anything fishy at Paradise, but I played a ring game at Carribean Sun Poker once (I only played there 3 or 4 times) in a low level ring game which had 7 or 8 players. I noticed that one of the "players" didn't make or call a single bet (or call a single raise), or type anything in 4 rounds (30+ hands) - as soon as the 10th person joined to make a full table, this "person" left. It seemed to me that this was a dummy player used to make table look fuller than it would otherwise, though of course I haven't got any proof that was the case. I do know that I'm never playing at that site again though.

I have been accused of being a bot at Paradise. I never reply to these allegations as I think it gives me am advantage. Besides if they were using bots don't you think they plug them into their shuffling algorithms so they could be unbeatable. Using bots makes no sense to me. Now, fixing hands is a different story lol :D :D
