So, I have recently stumbled upon a post on FB from Vanessa Selbst. It is about her quitting poker and leaving pokerstars team. Among other reasons, one really caught my attention:
Secondly, I don’t feel good about promoting poker as an ambassador anymore (I can’t tell amateurs they should come play online and it’s beatable for them when I don’t feel like it’s true).

For me, online poker was never for money making but more of a source of fun, but still it didn't seem unbeatable. As a live player, I don't quite understand what she meant..
So, I am interested in your thoughts on this? Also, how do you feel playing online poker as oppose to playing live?

I think (just guessing here) what she's saying is the game is not easy, like some people might believe it to be.

So, to take a shot at online poker and be a fairly constant winner takes time and effort. So, must likely, people starting to play poker will lose money, and she knows this, so it is hard for her to encourage new people to play with a somewhat false hope of winning good money fast and easy from online poker. Of course, the problem is that poker can become addicted and people could end up broke (along with all the consequences that can come from that).

i believe ACR isn't beatable , I can't ever seem to run up a bankroll ever tournaments no go either.
On other sites like ignition , intertops and Bet online .
I can beat tourneys and run up a nice profit to cash out. now I know my game needs some work .
but I don't understand how i can run it up on other networks but not ACR .
I get in good and get run down more often than not.
he'll even a bad player can run it up once in a while. idk very frustrating so I don't deposit on that site anymore.
just freerolls

go to their casino slots, they lat you easily win 60$ at first, then you loose. With a little experience, I made it to 250$ testerday, but spent most of it again. just hit a big win and run!
On the other hand, I won some in poker as well, it's just that most of the tournaments have very few payed places, so you have to stab for the final table from the beginning, don't be shy when it comes to the bubble, it's now or never!!!

and in case you refeer to me as a bad player, because i won the Knockout yesterday...

the last time in poker has become very difficult to earn compared to the fact that it was five years ago, recently drew attention to the Saturday tournament for 55 cents bounty was more than 10,000 participants as here you can win and something to earn

The Sunday Million at Pokerstars that's running right now pays $159,131.67 to the first place winner. It cost $215 to enter.

Somebody is going to "beat" it and walk away with that money. You have to know what you're doing to make it to the final table, for sure. But there's no reason that the somebody who wins can't be a sharp amateur, or at least have started out as an amateur.

In live I play with friends for entertainment over a mug of beer, online for earning money. Regarding Vanessa: in my opinion, her game was just bitten and on this she ceased to win.

It does feel unbeatable at times, when you get beat by a 72os holding AKh close to the final table. Pretty high prize pool too. I am this close to calling that guy a bot. This close I tell you. Yes, I'm venting. Sorry, sue me.

It is 100% bearable however it is waaaay harder to be able to nowadays. In the past the game was softer, now edges are smaller and you must constantly be keeping up with the current meta. Definitely beatable, definitely difficult.

the hardest way is online poker, but if you manage to advance then the result will be much greater than starting playing live, your knowledge will be greater in terms of what is happening in the field, of course this depends on whether you depend on any software to play .. I personally do not use software with the aim of perfecting my reading, and it is something that would recommend any player, although the slogan of an online player would be played to earn money and that is it. They say that they play many more hands, but many of those hands played by an online player are played robotically, without paying much attention to what others are doing since they are in 4 tables at once. This would be the negative of playing online, you do not develop your reading by playing many tables at once, of course it's my opinion. And yes, poker online can be beatable but u should be a very intelligent person to understand the details, patterns, to understand what happens and forget about the luck factor.

ya I've noticed lately some calls that don't make any sense. calling an all in with no draw just jack high and it comes runner 2 pair for that guy . hmm weird but alot . and now says with all the technology boys can be a real thing and depending on the poker site they may not do much about it because it's a filled seat and money moving around.

I sort of get it, however that really applies to poker in general. Percentage of players who are winning constantly (regardless of their status pro or amateur) is rather small, that would mean the game itself is not beatable and I personally don't feel that way. When I first read it, I was thinking something about rake getting higher and how it affects amateur players.
Also, it made me think of a possibility that online poker is somehow favoring professional players, although not sure in which way:confused:

Can you explain more about bots? I've seen Jungleman saying something about bots, especially in SnGs on Pokerstars. I figured it as if someone has a program that plays for you and winning you money all the time, but it seemed to "conspiracy theory" to me..

the microstakes are beatable however to get some money you need to climb stakes and there people do not make silly mistakes so once you hit a stake that you do not big edge over population then the rake beats you.

In high stakes it's only beatable for special people, that's what she means probably. But micros are easily beatable.

This would be a bot operated by the room, having table cards info preflop.
More likely, 72o had a big stack and a good read on you, the rest is variance.

Actually he had 10% over my stack and I was just moved to that table. I guess all there's left is probability.. and still, playing the worst possible hand in poker against an AK in the closing moments.. maybe an uninspired bluff that went perfect..

About the bot thing.. I'm sure if he was, he would've gotten a better hand for himself, lol. :)

Why it's just a game of cards, not is a usual work. Players who can manage their emotions and look past the short-term obstacles are usually survive. At some point in any professional poker player's career, they may find themselves playing for a big amount of money, playing for amounts that trump cost of life general people.

How do you feeling losing a great pot that you were a favorite to win?

Poker is a fun game, not is a usual work. Play rationally and managing your bankroll without risk of ruin in mind (like a pro, or not)!

Well I've heard stories that back in the day the player field on PS was so much softer than now. Current situation is a backside of huge popularity of online poker (to which Vanessa contributed) - the more people play the game the more competitive it becomes. As such amateurs have much harder time becoming players who "can beat it" because it involves spending such a big amount of time which may effectively make poker a second job.

I have won small amounts at every site I've played so it is "beatable." Now it's debatable whether my time is worth winning some loose change here and some dollars there, but I have never been unprofitable at any site.

I have never played online at anything but micro level because I will not risk decent amount of money online at poker because the sites are rigged. Especially in tournaments, the kinds of hands that are consistently made is not realistic.

I rather take my chances on stocks. At least there, I have control over what I buy and sell. In poker it's luck once the coins are on the table.

ACR ruined their cash games with The Beast promo attracting all the pro's,sharks, grinders etc. Same with Sit-N-Crush.Also they purposefully distorted their tournaments to eliminate the risk for the house. If you know anything about MTT's any small change totally changes the entire game and how it should be played.

I will have to agree with you that if you get a bad beat one time it seems that they then keep coming. My theory is that they are trying to eliminate you from the game. So I think I will try to stop playing hands until I am moved to another table. Now if I play at the table holdem games with 200+ buyin I do see a bad beat once in awhile but it seems to follow a normal distribution not like what I see constantly online.
Conclusion for me is that play very safe after a bad beat online if you want to stay in the game.

The 5 hours of late registration and blind structure makes the first 2 hours of MTT on ACR dangerously irrelevant as you can lose your tournament life or win chips that are borderline worthless as it is still a long risk filled 8-14 hour tourney. This is why a lot of players skip the first 2 or so hours. The unlimited re-entry,add-on and rebuys makes the knockout rate much lower than normal Bovada,Ignition etc. MTT's, which makes the MTT more difficult.
