Most play money games for poker sites allows the player to get familiar with the poker client functions. The only other time when there is prize for MTT, such as a trophy or clothing.

You can "test" these strategies in freerolls aswell without losing money btw (and doing so you could actually win money)

I feel you must take all poker games seriously Play Money, Points or Real Money, otherwise you learn nothing from them, there are a lot of players who don't really care when playing for Points or Play Money chips, I have even come across them in Real Money games, So you can win more often if you play seriously, and if you can make the money, then go one to make the Final Table, and eventually Heads-up play you can experience all aspects of the game.
Admittedly you get the all-in idiots at the start of any poker game Play Money and Freeroll's but if you can get through the first half an hour, things begin to change as the more serious players get to play more like they would in a Real Money game.
Some say you cannot learn anything from Play Money games or Freeroll's, but I think they are wrong, admittedly they are different, in that some players do not play seriously and can be too aggressive, but you do gain experience, and to be honest that goes a long way.
Practice makes Perfect.

I absolutely love playing with play chips, just as much as I do with real money. The game itself doesn't change for me. When I sit down at a table the first thing I do is evaluate everyone's chip stack, positions etc. The buyin itself is never a factor for me.

As much as I love poker, and I really really love it I could never play if it wasn't real money but that's just me, its the whole reason I got rid of the playstation as I had achieved a God like status on GTA and it helped me not one bit.
I mean my ego was loving being one of the elite players but that time would have been better spent reading the super system or playing or watching poker. I also remember my gf had playchips on her ipod back in the day, one of my friends played it and basically broke the game he went from zero to millions in a day,
maybe if it was like an App were you get paid to play it I would give it a go as I play a free gin rummy app but only because I get paid in bitcoin to do it.

To be honest, I did that when I start with poker. After that, I looked how most of people don't take seriously the game without real money. Otherwhise, you got that most of people that plays for real money are very tight.
