If you're just starting out, you want to start small. Perhaps freerolls and micro stakes will be best. This will help you get a feel for the variance in the games. It's not good to just jump into a $50 cash game without some experience first. You might get lucky a few times, but the game is played over the long term, and that's how you'll measure your success. A thoughtful player is going to adapt their range and style to that of the players at the table.

I would start with a dollar of 1-2, and then increase

I seen a difference a big enough one actually, players are a lot more aggressive at NL 50$ and almost every hand it feels like it plays for stacks, I had recently a few shots at 50 NL$ and even tho I managed to get a few buy ins up at the start I ended up loosing it all back as people are more willingly to play for stacks a lot more often and coolers are not that rare .
But before you decide to move up always make sure your rolled for it , don't do like me lol and play with 4 buy ins or less.
Gl if you decide to give it a shot.

Do you mean cash games?
If you are a beginner, then in this case I recommend playing tournaments for $ 50, if you are lucky, there will be a good profit. And you are lucky as a newbie, all the stack entries will be in your direction.
In a cash game, you won’t be in the black at a distance, even if you win a few stacks in the beginning.
