This is a discussion on Poker: sports or gambling? within the online poker forums, in the Live Poker section; On June 26, 2007, the Ministry of Sports, Tourism, and Youth Policy introduced poker to the All-Russian Register of Sports. What do you think?
It's not a sport. It is a form of gambling that some are much better at than others. Skill is a major factor, but still not a sport. If we all start showing up at the table with our gatorade bottles maybe I will change my mind.
There are more math things than sports thing. You can weight 200 kilograms and play poker, what kind of sport is this? This is smart game ,where you can improve your financial situation if you play well, but definetly not sport.
Poker can be an intellectual sport like chess or whatever. But on short run it depend of the luck very much.
Personally i think it should be separate category for these games(preference, poker, chess, go and similar). Classic sport should involve physical activities.
I don't think poker as a sport, because I associate sports with physical activity. That's why I also don't think chess is a sport. Like the other user said, poker is a gambling with some sort of skills.
I would not call poker sport in the traditional sense...it is a game of skill and chance...you need both to win. I have always thought of sport as a competitive way to stay healthy and a healthy way to be competitive.
poker is a game of skill. live poker in my opinion is a sport. online poker has already become a kind of casino, because of such poker formats as all-in & fold, hyper heads-up, all-in shootout. MTT does not apply to this, and there the skill solves everything. but, still, according to the legislation (of my country), poker is a kind of gambling games.
