I wonder why people say poker is unbeatable when with a certain amount of study and experience you can go to the casino and sit in a table where there is retired folks and gamblers donating money, yes for sure, they can get lucky and cooler you, but at the end of the night the luck ends and you finish with all the chips and a pretty good profit or maybe just in mexico this happens where the tables are full of gamblers just throwing money for fun. What are your thoughts on this?

I wonder to what levels you can find that kind of tables. Some time ago a well-known Chinese millionaire went to Macao to play poker and regulars from all over the world traveled there just to win the chips. There was a fish on the table and eight sharks.. What blind levels do you play?

If you're looking to win a few dollars, it's a good option to go to a casino where people go to sit just for fun.

But the real money is in pro tournaments.

I think the secret of your success is being capable to go to the casino and sit in a table. From that vantage point you can see your opponents' whole cards, no wonder they are donating money to you :)

Is live poker easier compared to online poker (low stakes)?

It all depends on your level of readiness. If you are a professional, for you any game among senior citizens)) and other fans (as you write) is just an easy game. If you make good money in live poker, I do not advise you to play online, do not waste time.

I have been to Mexico many times and have seen how loose the tables can be. I would still say that Vegas is still a great place to play when tourism is high. Obvious punters there wishing to say that they experienced some action on the tables.

I don't know for the USA but as far as Serbia it's not quite like that. The people who sit on the table do not throw their money, On the table among players, there is usually one fish on the full ring table. Two max. the way I stay in plus is by playing only tournaments, with high rewards. Aldo, I am not the best example of a regular player, because I play like 4 tournaments a month ( weekends ) with buying from 100$-300$. Still, I have my job, and I wouldn't dream of trying to live from poker.

Ive found live poker players to be far more loose. There are many more multi-way flops, and lots more limping. Although a lot less 3betting and squeezing. More value in set mining and draw chasing.

Im usually drunk though so doesn't always go well for me :)

Yeah I definitely agree there is money to be made, but chump change. Real money is in the big tourneys.

Poker is a game with high variance and of course with a lot of study and being disciplined you will win in the long - term you will win, but you have to be prepared mentally to face the bad beats.

From the responses in this thread, it appears that almost everybody makes profit playing poker. Congrats...just a thought...so who are all the losing players...all over 65 years old ? I think playing against Doyle Brunson, Barry Greenstein and some other more experienced players might change your minds.

I think that online poker at medium and high stakes is much more difficult than live poker in casinos because there are more recreational poker players who drink alcohol and who just want to have fun.

Live Poker is Easy

Sorry, but I beg to differ. I was just in a live poker tournament this past Saturday and I was pumped to play great. That thought screeched to a halt in about 1/2 hour into the game. I could not get one face card in my pocket cards in that half hour. I must state I do play a tight game but I will play with only one face card and a high numbered card as well as numbered paired cards. Even with that I may have played a half a dozen times in this first half hour.

I eventually got as far as the first break and was able to add on chips. I was now able to be more positive in playing more hands but just fell short of being in the money.

The above example is just as prevalent in online poker, it just happens much faster.

I would say it depends on the event and the buy-in, if you play a live MTT. The weekly regular MTTs in a casino are much easier to play than a bigger live event, that lasts long hours and several days.

I like live play better, and at the Low stakes I have played, it's easier. Not because the player base is stupid, old or clueless, but because I can see my opponents. It is better than a HUD.

Poker, whether live or online is not "easy". If that was the case then it would be wildly more popular and everyone would be doing it. But since it's less than a zero sum game after you consider the casino rake. For every "This game is easy" winner there have to be at least 1 loser who is losing even more than the winner is winning to donate to that winner AND pay the table rake. Conventional wisdom is that at the average live table more than half the players are losers. So to call the game easy is a bit out of line. Even at a table full of fish where you have a clear skill advantage and see all the mistakes they make there will be days where they hit their draws and crack your over pairs. The game is so slow when it comes to hands per hour that a few bad breaks in big pots can ruin your session. Over a live 6 hour session you're probably talking about 150-180 hands tops. If you are better than most players at your table and you don't run to far below expected value over that tiny hand sample then you can win fairly consistently. But to call it easy is still trivializing it in my opinion.

Comparing live reads to a HUD is an interesting but separate conversation. The best online players probably interpret HUD statistics and timing tells to a similar extent that the best live players interpret comparable live info.

Don't try that on a Sunday morning, You'll have a table full of regs who all know each other's name.
Table selection is KING in poker.
Live poker on Friday night, and Saturday night is easy - at all other times - it's a group of regs looking to swarm you.

Play your range not your cards... you'll do much better.
Ie - you are on the button with 7, 9 unsuited and it folds (or a few limpers) to you...
What do you do?
You should be opening for 5 or 6 big blinds.
Then you should be making a cbet 65% of the time at least.
They will fold out enough times to offset the times when you are beat and have to fold on the turn or river.
Good luck!!
