i know the best way to get better at poker is to both play and study- but how much time should you be doing both things?
Should you study more than play or play more than study?
Getting experience is just as important as learning the game, so what’s the fine line in between both?
Your thoughts?

In my opinion, one should spend more time playing than studying. Playing has the element of studying in itself and by losing, you take lessons which are often remembered for a long time. And on how much time - as much you have free and playing brings you pleasure.

Good luck and have a nice day!

That's not my Opinion. I'm also a new player, but i prefer to learn the basics first, before i train them. If you make the same faults again and again and again, it is very hard to correct them in the future.

I invest 50% of my time for reading books and 50% for playing freeroll games.

My opinion on the theory and practice in poker - first, it is necessary to study the basic theory, then practice.
I think it's better to play more than study. The best way to learn poker is to play and analyze your hands.

Playing is the best form of study i think. I learned from playing online, watching poker on TV and getting involved in some poker forums. It really depends how much time you want to invest into the game. Poker play and strategy appears to be a lot more complex these days. Saw a guy jam with 9 10 pre flop today and the commentators called it a semi bluff... wha?

I think both are important. The hands played give you experience and theory the knowledge to be able to put them into practice. The best way to face the game is by combining the two things.

Regards :)

I think there‘ll be a learning curve.
As a beginner you should study more because you first have to learn and understand the strategies that you want to apply at the tables. The more solid your theoretical poker skills become the more you can switch the focus on playing at a later stage.

The experience can't be put into so many words

I study by watching others, annylizing past play via Holdem Manager and my own notes, and trying to stay sharp on figuring pot odds.

The most important part of winning poker is guaging what the other player is doing. That only comes through the experience of play. You can't put that into words or numbers and study that. You can divide styles of play into different table images (tight, aggressive, passive, etc...) and personalities but actually reading those things at the table to a point where they're pushing my game further takes the actual experience.

Sink or swim. Go to the closest casino, buy some chips and mix it up. Or if there is a cheap tournament. I learned to play with 80+ y/o guys @ Nevada Palace playing a $20 buy-in tournament daily.

How much free time do you have? You can start off by studying for a 1/2 hour to an hour before each session. If you have one or two nights a week to set aside for studying instead of grinding, that will put you ahead of a lot of the field.

Well, in college, you can go to school for four years before making money in your field of study. Lets hope poker has a lot less of a learning period.

Good players

The best way to learn and get better at poker is to play against good players . You will probably lose at first, but you would be destined to improve quickly

You should study and apply what you learned in the very next game and just keep doing that, learning, applying, learning, applying.
Applying what you learned will help you retain that information for much longer than for the average person.

When you starting out 50 study/50 playing. After a year and your more competent 60 playing/ 20 study/ 20 hand reviews. Then after you feel your winning start to add more volume.

Yes. Study, play, then go back and re read and then play again. The most for me is after doing that I sit and watch and do not play. I instead try to figure out betting habits and try to guess what each player has.
Also when I am out of the tourney, I keep watching til the end. Kills me when a player is too impatient with other players, telling them to speed up etc... the tourney is going to last as long as it is going to last. If you stay relaxed and watching other players you are a lot better off than just wanting to play every hand fast and not pay attention.

Hey. in my opinion, it is worthwhile to combine both game and study .. because one will be difficult without the other .. of course you can only play and after some time you can learn poker, and with the help of study, the process will go much faster

Do what works best for you. Keeping in mind that the biggest advantage of online poker is the opportunity to play many more hands than one can playlive, it will do you no good to just play, if you want to improve, you have to study. When & how much is an individual decision.

Your thoughts?

In my opinion, it depends on your current level. If you are beginner, you have to pay more attention to studying. You have to give preference to learning rather than playing in that case.
And when you think, that you know a lot about poker, then you can spend more time playing than studying.

Learning poker is very easy. It is difficult to profit from it.
I believe that it is necessary to study and practice a lot.
Good luck.
