Texas Hold’em

Hello,

This is my first post. I have a question which you will probably all think is a bit dumb but it is confusing me.

I have bought Poker For Dummies to learn more about Texas Hold’em. The book and every other source I have quickly looked at talks about playing Texas Hold’em against the other players. However, I was on a cruise recently and the game there was played by all the players against the dealer. In addition, all my local casinos play against the dealer (though they may have games against other players as well - I’m not sure).

I would like (at least initially) to learn to play against the dealer as I am sure this is simpler. Where can I learn more about this?

The game it sounds like you’re talking about is blackjack where your cards have to equal 21(without going over) to beat the dealer.

This is a fun game too but more luck than strategy.

Poker, you play against other players at the table and try winning their money with the best poker hand or bluffing to get them to fold. Involves a little luck on card draws but is more skill

Yeah I would be inclined to agree with Boston, I have never heard of a poker game where the players are playing against the dealer rather than each other but I may be mistaken with my quite limited knowledge of poker but it does sound like you have been seeing blackjack rather than poker.

It is a house game that is not much like playing in an actual poker room at the casino.
