Hello dear Cardschat Community!

I would like to know what is your opinion on the game of Omaha.

It is the game I play the most and the one I find the most interesting.
More complex than Holdem, but not as slow as some other limit games, like Stud or Razz.

I like Omaha, but I've been hooked on Holdem ever since I started playing it. One day I hope to play a little more Omaha than I would Holdem, but that day never seems to come. Holdem is a game that everyone plays so that's why I play it too.

I really love Omaha, PLO, PLO high/low. The problem is I no longer truly enjoy playing the variemts with any regularity.

A few years ago the popularity of Omaha grew markedly, I believe somewhat due to the exposure of Poker Go and the Kings Casino livestreams which featured wild gamblers to make the programs/streams entertaining (prior to this PLO got little traction in terms of viewership). They succeeded. However, to slightly older school players the idea of playing every hand let alone pre-flop raising every hand was farcical– little more than an incessant coin flip.

As I have noted, I am out of synch with how most Omaha varients are played today-the pure gamble is what so many appear to enjoy- but I know lurking somewhere is a game which develops postflop and when I find a table where this is appreciated by all it is a joy to play.

I like Omaha a lot. As you say it's more complex than Hold'em. The part I find frustrating is how often you end up with a split pot, especially in OMHL/PLO8. It's so easy to win a hand while losing money when you only get 25% of the pot. But, that's also what makes it more challenging and complex.

Ah yes but isn't that the beauty of plo8? I love not only being able to have 4 cards for some sick straight/multiple flush draws. But sometimes it's just as fun to know you have a decent high but a stellar low and play that to try to get the other person to fold, if they don't you'll get at least half the pot! PLO8 is definitely one of my favorite games; only played online though, would love to try that out at a table.

Hi abuka,

I'd like to start playing Omaha to see what the difference is to Holdem, I just now each player gets 4 hole cards instead of 2..could you explain, what is the biggest difference to classic NL Holdem, how does the strategy change in comparison?

Thanks for your feedback!

Cheers:)

Three differences are that you see a lot of split pots, it's usually pot limit rather than no limit, and it's not as easy to bluff people off hands because of the first two differences. The rules are on the pokerstars site but I can't get that to load right now otherwise I'd post the specific link here.

The worst game ever. Your AAKK can lose to any type 78J9 hand. Moreover, this happens all the time, there isn’t any big advantage of starting hands. And I don’t really like it. Very dispersive and random game. Perhaps many successfully make money on Omaha, but I do not understand this game.

Omaha High is like holdem with 4 cards, basically.
Use any two of your 4 hole cards to make best hand. U can imagine, two pair is not very strong

Omaha hi lo is like a cross between 4 card holdem & Razz rules, but low cards must be 8 or under (lowest possible hand, ace low)

no. I mean, when I push, I get what I expect with a strong hand. it’s not 1-2-50 hands, it’s a matter of constant play. This game is not for everyone.

Talking about Omaha Hi, it is basically like Holdem, but with 4 cards, pot limit, and you can only use exactly 2 cards of you hand.

For example, if you have 2222 preflop, your hand will always have 22 + 3 cards coming from the board, you cannot improve.

On the contrary, if you have 78JQ, and the flop is 9Tx, you would have a straight with a 6,7,8,J,Q,K, for a total of 20 outs.

This just to give you an idea of the complexity of the game. :)

I agree with the difference it makes compared to NLH.

Hands run much closer in equity, this is why, as someone said before, this is a draw equity game.
Being able to recognize the good draws from the bad ones is what makes money in the longer run.
Chasing a gutshot or a weak flush draw will be detrimental to your Cashier.

At the beginning, when I started with omaha, I really had to get used to the 4 cards that you get on your hand, but after a while I got used to it and now I can sometimes enjoy it. But I'm not a real fan of omaha. i prefer horse or 8 game there you also play omaha but not all the time

I like Omaha because it's much easier to become a 'good' PLO player versus NLHE. The amount of study/understanding you need to beat the average PLO game is much lower, particularly in low/micro stakes.

In general, PLO (esp PLO8) reminds me of short deck as a lot more hands have enough equity to call preflop with draw hands. It's always interesting seeing how close big pair hands run to double suited/straight hands when it comes to calling preflop 3 and 4 bets.

Great description by 80abukaH. Players must hang in there with their big draws so hands get to the river card frequently to see what player hit and took in the big pot (usually not me). You always have to recognize that if there is a flush possible out there or a paired board, someone will have that best hand so fold if your draws are thin to an even better hand.

Actually live playing Omaha H/L. Game is full of action and a ton of fun. Can also be very dangerous game if you dont know what your doing. Think there is more gamble in Omaha.
