I'm playing a lot of these $3.50 turbo 180man sngs on stars at the moment. Often people will rebuy chips as soon as the table opens doubling their stack from 1500 chips to 3000. Can anybody explain the theory to this and do you believe it to be a good strategy?

if you have AA and run into a guy who has 3000 chips, you just lost 1500 chips because you only had 1500.

you need huge stacks to win these things, playing tight and trying to get in the money is a sure way not to get into the money.

I believe many players feel more comfortable starting with 3k stack instead of 1.5k. Personally I'd never do it - I believe in my game enough to start with a regular stack and I like to feed on the ones who do a rebuy right away. I've noticed that most of them is more loose in their play and call a lot. Of course this doesn't go for all of them, so don't rely on that!

Not a big player of the rebuy games, however if there were a few others on the table that double stacked to start then so would I most likely. If it was only me it's pointless because effective stack play is still only 1500, however if say 4 out of 9 doubled then it puts you on even playing field to play deeper stacked with those and get max value if you double through them.

It's mainly to each their own though, and depends on what you outline to be your # of rebuy's before you stop because if you double stack to start your going to usually want to double rebuy if you bust and essentially that could be a slippery slope if not careful i would think. I have fallen that slippery slope before and probably why i'm not a fan of rebuys, don't mind a 2r1a or something though.

if you want to profit in these games you need to play aggro a bit earlier, and i'd totally recommend buying more chips to build your stack. also call off much lighter, because players tend to go nuts in these things early. adding to that, you really do need to rebuy in these things, set a limit obviously, but you need some sort of limit. This looks from the outset as only a $3 game, but in reality it's actually more like a $15-$20 buyin game, because of the rebuy. if you normally play $15-$20 games, great! if your bankrolled for $3 games then avoid these.

starting with a 1500 stack with the intention of playing tight and chipping up in small pots is not how you take these things down. as bluff said, to each their own, but if you want to make money, you need a stack to play late game profitably.

I personally prefer a 3k starting stack.. for several reasons.
if you do get a chance to double up your on 6k which us only really one big hand away from 12/13k stack which puts you right in the mix after the bubble.

you can afford to wait for spots sometimes your forced into plays with 1500.
And lastly you can take control of your table and gain easy blinds as players are reluctant to 3bet shuv if you have them well covered..

usually a 3bet shove means small to medium pair ace high or maybe a broadway hand kj etc

There is some solid advice in this thread, but keep in mind the date when the thread was made when ABC poker was the norm.
