Have you ever looked up a player's stats to be shocked at how bad they are?

I had a player on my table yesterday that has a -70% average and total ROI, with an ITM % of 6%. How can you possibly be that bad??? Oh yeah...he's played like 3,000 games and is down over $20,000!!!

I know we all play this game for different reasons, but sometimes I am blown away by how bad people are at this game. :D:D:D

Hello. Hard to say why one plays like that, but they do. Sounds like you have some good software!

Some people have a lot of money and are only playing for entertainment purposes. Others sadly have gambling addictions and are just unable to stop.

How much does it actually cost to learn to play the game to a really good standard you can read all the text books you want the only real way to learn is by playing.

There are many bad players just playing for fun. I think that is why poker is still profitable.

Its weird I just sharkscoped a player who had like 35k games and they were a huge loser the whole time. I do not understand why they would keep playing, but I don't understand why players limp to sitters either.

Yes sharkscope can be a good indicator for tournaments and sit and gos but it is extremely flawed and often it does not record the ridiculous beats when shot taking or freeroll winnings or rakeback also bonus clearances for example long list here sometimes the pay out for tournaments even is wrong.
Will give an example of a site I just started to play on recently it says I am down $900 and I will admit am running bad in the tournaments I am playing in but genuinely I am up over $2000 profit withdrawn overall on this site thanks to $600 new depositor bonus and spins serious discrepancy here in sharkscope each site is the same does not match my deposit versus withdrawals records.:dontknow:
And while even $20,000 might seem a lot to me and you to some guys this is only 2x 10k buy ins where AK lost to a high pair and a high pair lost to AK preflop and they could care less as plenty more where that came from as they have probably sold 10 or 15 bitcoin recently that they held from years ago or whatever or are high earning professional people outside of poker,
Bad idea to judge a book by its cover every situation and player is unique but a rough guide does help that is all that sharkscope is really due to having too many errors.

It depends why you play. There are players who know only the basic rules and do not want to learn anything. They like the game though and do not mind loosing some money to play. There is nothing wrong with that. After all having only sharks in the sea is not good for the game.

I'd like to become very good at poker so I'm working on that. Sometimes I suck so bad that it crosses my mind to quit. I then remember when I played golf. I could stink up a course and then make one shot that was PGA worthy and that kept me playing.

Never quit, never give up. Take time away from the tables now and then to recharge.

It means that the game of poker has turned into a casino game, or he has a lot of money and these 20 thousand are not so important to him!

Probably he must be a retired senior citizen or a juvenile toasting his parents' money learning to play poker.

But when it comes to sharp falls, I say this is part of poker. In the classes I have attended, the teachers clearly say that the nature of poker is also losing. In the last class an example was mentioned of a player who lost 400 thousand in 7 years and last year he won 4 million. Poker nature.

Thanks for the post Hugh.

I understand the points you have brought up and I appreciate the time you put in to this post. :)

I'd like to note that my rhetorical question in the subject line dominated the content of my post. I do not wonder why people still play. Mostly, I just wanted to highlight when I "spot" somebody on my table as playing differently, and the SS statistics support my tableside read.

I'd also like to note that I have supreme confidence in my ability to analyze the intricacies of SS data. I understand that all -60% AVE ROI's are not created equally. :)

Cheers! :D

I know a few player who are long term looser on sharkscope. The reasons they play are different but may give you an idea why. One plays for the pure entertainment of it. Well over 1000 games and a steady looser. He does not play big stakes but just enjoys they break from life he gets from playing poker. The other guy has some very nice wins over the years. He to is a long term player but plays for the big scores when he hits. He plays higher stakes but not to high to be to be a concern. Thousands of games he played and still loses overall to this day but when he wins 4 and even 5 figures scores is what he is about. He is also only about large field events. Over the years he is only down a grand or 2 and its also just for enjoyment.

The thing that gets me with both players, is neither of them will work to improve there games. The one may read an old book here and there but really looking onto the games is not part of his vocabulary.
