As a Typical Asian Family, my parents always think that when someone playing a poker card is definitely a gamble. But they don't know that actually poker is not just gamble, in poker the luck can't 100% lead you to win. We need to study, practice, getting experience and more to win the pot or even eliminate the enemy in tournament.

But my family only think i'm doing gamble....

My family were worried at first until I explained about what exactly a freeroll was. Thankfully they know that I have a decent amount of self control and won’t go gambling away large sums of money.

My mother has the same opinion about poker, that it is a game of chance and that you only lose money here. Dad is more loyal and supports me:)

Your family has the right idea. You are indeed playing a game of chance, but it all depends on your attitude to this game of chance. If you take the game seriously, play disciplined, follow bankroll management and improve your skills, you have every chance to become a professional with time and experience. Don't pay attention to criticism, just persevere towards your goal.

My family is generally neutral about my passion for poker. On the contrary, to a certain extent, my family is happy that I'm at home playing online instead of going out with friends.

They were worried it was just gambling(like slot machines) at first and very doubtful if I ever did win that I'd get the money out of the site in into my pocket. That didn't last very long when 4-5 months later I was able to show them a bank account with 5k in it all won playing poker.

My wife before we were married had the exact same concerns on the 3rd or 4th date when she showed up and found me playing online poker. Took a bit of convincing and showing her years of charts, bank records and deposit/withdraw transactions on the poker site. But eventually she came around and we've now been married 10+ years.

The wife quickly became very happy I had a hobby that keeps me home and makes a bit of side money.

Cheers!!!

My family never liked that I started playing poker, luckily I only did it recreationally and this did not grow up, I know friends who have separated from their wives because of poker, and have lost a lot of money too

Until poker makes serious money, there will always be problems. The optimal time for playing is a maximum of 2-3 hours, and 1-2 hours after everyone has gone to bed.If poker prevents you from getting enough sleep and fully relaxing with your family, then it is not needed. The food is ready, the house is cleaned, the child is sleeping, and the wife demands attention, then poker aside, I knew one player, he couldn’t play in the evenings, his wife said, you don’t pay attention to me.

My family didn't say anything nice to me when they knew I was playing poker. But to be honest, I do not worry about the opinion of others, because I choose what I want to do. Especially when it is about money.

Families can have mixed reactions when they find out someone has started playing poker. Some might be supportive, seeing it as a hobby or skill-based game that encourages strategic thinking. They may even feel intrigued or curious, especially if it’s a friendly game or the person is careful with money management. On the other hand, some family members might worry about the potential risks, associating poker with gambling and addiction. Concerns about financial stability and time commitment can also arise. Overall, reactions often depend on the family’s perception of poker and gambling in general.

My parents are long gone, but they were also wary of gambling. I play poker for fun, and I play in a disciplined and patient manner, so my game is safe and brings only positive emotions.

My mother taught me how to play. She was happy once my hands were big enough that I was able to hold onto the cards on my own.
By the time I was 7yrs. old, I could shuffle and deal better than all of them. I kept losing until I was in my 40's.

My parents told me not to put aside my studies, when they saw that this did not affect my life they took it calmly. I don't play professionally although it has helped us with expenses at home

My Parents were very sceptical about me playing Poker many years ago , my Father was under the impression that if an opponent had more money than you they could theoretically buy the pot, Which could happen in other games of chance, but when I explained that at any point during the game You can call a huge bet with just 1 chip left in your stack by going all-in, He still couldn't quite grasp it.
They always told me to be careful and not lose too much money, and When I told them I only play freerolls, this baffled them even more, "How can a Poker site make money, giving it away?" They asked. Quite simple I would reply, for every player like myself that makes money for Free there are thousands of other players that think it is "Easy Money" and will deposit huge amounts trying to win huge amounts. I'm happy winning a few Cents and building a Free Bankroll from nothing!
I promised my Wife when I first started playing On-line Poker that I would never make a deposit, that way I couldn't possibly lose any money, because she was under the same impression as my parents. Poker was Evil and a bad form of Gambling. I proved that any site that offered Freerolls were open to players like myself to build a Bankroll from Freerolls and then use that money to buy-into other games, Sure it's hard work! But far more rewarding if you can do it for Free!
Poker was never about making myself rich, It has always been about playing the game with money that was never mine to begin with, Every buy in game I lose has cost me nothing, Because I am playing with the site's money, not my own, and that is Priceless!

They didn't take me seriously, even though I was profitable from the start.
When I showed my first major prize, they already accepted it.

Straight up gambling, say, at a casino, the house always has the odds in theoir favor. So your chane of winning, in the long run, depends on luck, variance. There is an element of skill, in craps, and blackjack, where you can make less risky bets, but the house still has the advantage. Poker, on the other hand, has both skill and variance involved. Since every hand is different in poker, all players are equal, there is no advantage. Players get their advantage from both variance and their ability at poker. Skill is definitely involved.
