I often see a lot of the same faces every time I visit the casino and the same names day after day at multiple tables online. What makes someone a pro as opposed to a reg as opposed to a recreational player?

In my opinion if you make a living of this more or less consistently you are a pro if you make profits but not much at all semi pro
someone who doesnt play much could make huge winnings but he is still a recreational for me
and regs can be good or bad regs

These words are not slang words... you can use vocabulary or wiki or logic to understand the meaning.

1) Pro = Professional is the one who earns money for living from his profession. So in poker world "pro" is the one who has stable profit in a period of time. For example 90% of finalists of biggest live poker tournaments are professionals.

2) Reg = Regular is the one who plays often, but doesn't necessarily means that he has profit in the long run, Reg plays a lot and is well recognized by other regs and pros at the tables. Majority of Regs are also Pros.

3) Recreational players are those who play poker well, but it's not their main source of living, it might be a wealthy businessman who earns additional profit playing poker while his factories generate stable income without his participation.

so Recreational Reg is't always a player who has profit from poker. Pro isn't always a reg. Reg isn't always a pro. Recreational Pro is a smart and wealthy guy you know :)

4) 50 shades of the fish located below and I'm not going to describe all of them.

p.s. these values are very subjective, there is no objective opinion, some people in poker world can think that player who earned $1000 during a year of playing poker is a pro, while some other people might say that $1000 per year is nothing, cause they pay much more for the broadband internet during this year.

It's a lot simpler than this thread makes it seem. A professional is someone who makes their living playing poker and nothing else.

A professional is someone who lives what he does in this case, if someone lives of poker, is a professional, although not known, or a poker room sponsor them.

For me, a professional poker player is someone who often develops himself in this direction, learns, does not stop there, just tries a new technique of the game.

I believe that a professional player is a player who earns regular income from the game. The professional player has many years of experience, highly developed skills, personal style of play, his own strategy and tactics.

A professional.

Someone who does this for a living and supports her/himself with it independently.

Recreational players have a fallback plan to support them, be it a separate career, assets, etc.

Pros accept the risks and tackle it head on, while managing their fears. They approach the game as their job. They set some rules that govern them and follow business practices that work for them. For example, consistent BRM, education on the different facets of the game, keeping an eye on developments in the poker world, and constantly training to improve their skills - these are just some good habits.

The decision to become a pro is a significant one.

Once it's made and you get comfortable as a pro, the next target is to become a champion.

Basically, that comes down to keeping an eye on #1 until the final showdown and you claim that title.

Then you hold on to the title until you're satisfied and have nothing left to prove in this domain. Then you move on to something new or retire on some island with your close ones.

My idea of a pro is not only a winner but someone who has endorsements etc.

I’ll add if others respect your game and willing to stake you is sign of a professional
Means that you must have good results and someone willing to put up money for you to play is the ultimate sign that you are pro to me

For me the main division is the way you treat poker. If you are playing for fun and you have other regular job which provides your main income you are not pro even if you are winning player. If your main source of money is poker than you are professional.

First of all, what is the difference between an Amateur and a professional in a General sense, regardless of the field of activity. I am reminded of such a fact. An Amateur is someone who loves an activity, that is, enjoys it. A professional is someone who gets paid for the same activity. That is, he earns a living by providing for himself, and not just receives money. So it is in poker.

Being able to earn money and live from the game I think makes you professional.

Someone that takes the time to learn the game. Someone that watches others play, studies and utilizes different strategies, and able to play different styles. Someone that can be the player that only plays strong hands and in the next hour can loosen up and play garbage hands as strong hands.

A Pro can pay all his bills from poker constantly, a reg generally is wanting to be a pro but he is not tottally prepared yet, recreational players may be reg or gambler, but they play for fun.

Pros

I often see a lot of the same faces every time I visit the casino and the same names day after day at multiple tables online. What makes someone a pro as opposed to a reg as opposed to a recreational player?

Over the years of playing I have considered pros to be one thing, a person who lives solely of poker. Meaning that if they didn't have poker they would not be surviving. They pay there rent with money earned off poker, there food and leisure costs off poker and basically just live life with there earnings from the game. What else would a pro be in your opinion?? You could see the same faces all day at a casino, they could just be rich degenerate gamblers, same goes with online. Just because you see a person playing this game all the time absolutely does not make them a pro. Pros live off of poker and anything surrounding poker that you can earn off of, streaming, teaching, all that kind of stuff. If there doing this they are obviously very skilled at the game and are winning players. In my opinion you can't work a job and earn a living and be a professional poker player, even if you played everyday, that would just make you a reg. Pros should earn and live off of 100% poker profits and anything else that has to do with poker but mainly playing poker. Do pro athletes work other jobs? the answer is no, the eat 100% off there sport or game they play, sponsorship(because of said game) and whatever else they earn from( started because of the game). If poker and everything in poker ( teaching, coaching, staking, etc.) isn't what you do to earn 100% of your income your not a pro. Sure you can make tons of money in other ventures, but if poker isn't what got you there or you don't play poker to earn the vast majority of your money or at least a good living salary, your not a pro. My opinion, but I believe it to be the right one.
