If you are new stay away from the cash tables, because you can lose a lot of money really quickly but you cannot win a lot of money quicker it is more of a grind.
Jungleman and Haseeb Quereshi along with Tom Dwan got their starts with SNG.
Depends on what interest you. Different strategies for those two types. Lot people strictly play cash and do rather well. I'm better at MTT and SnG, but like the break at cash tables. Have made more money at SnG and prefer them. Most of my training is on MTT and very little on cash. Not as interested and it shows at the table. Devote the time away from the table on the one you like better.
In my opinion for a steady income I find sng much better. I can multi-table a lot better so will play a bit lower stakes in more games which gives me a more steady income.
If you are a beginner player, it is better to start playing at a minimum in inexpensive tournaments from 0.10 cents in order not to lose a lot in the game cache, and then when you learn well you can play both cash games and tournaments simultaneously and try to make profit at all games !!
