To win poker we have to make many better decisions than others so at least you need to be smart enough to understand why we should do those, although I don't think we need to be very smart to become winning players.

I don't think poker players are any more smarter than someone that doesn't play poker.
It's a game of skill and luck, and within any game of skill and luck the level varies a lot based on how much effort someone puts into the game. I believe the best poker players are players who are good at chunking together information and quick to memorize / identify spots that they have been in before and are thus able to reuse prior experience based on how well it went. Having a intuitive understanding of something is not an easy skill to learn, and as such some players will be more limited than others.

There are a lot of different people playing poker, some of them are very smart, and some of them are not that smart, but for poker just being smart is not enough! I believe that if you have well developed logical thinking and patience, then you can achieve some success in poker! Patience and work on the game will do the trick, I believe that every hardworking person can achieve success in poker! Like in other fields, it's not a requirement to be smart to be able to play poker... now, from my experience and the research I've made when I've started playing poker, there are a few skills you'll need to master in order to maximize your chances of being successful and make money from poker(I won't go too much in detail but your math should be decent to be able to make some quick calculations* your number of outs/ percentage to win the hand... some decent mental game... also, poker is a game that continue to evolve, so dedicated poker players need to study a lot too).
So, IMO smart poker players- especially the ones that always work to improve their game- have a big advantage on the long run and for sure their chance to become winning players is higher $$$

are poker players smart? well there are people too, and you can find everything that is available for non-poker players, also for poker players. The subtle difference is that clever players are constantly making profit while playing and the less clever ones don't. But I don't want to say that you are stupid if you lose at poker because something like that happens to the smartest.
