I consider poker gambling using a literal definition. The mere fact that some players are able to attain a positive expectation does not mean they're not gambling. In that sense, even casinos are "gambling" against the players.

To give an example: Imagine a billionaire offered to give you AA against his any two cards, and would go all in heads up pre-flop. The only condition: you have to wager your entire house, car, assets, net worth, etc. and you cannot purchase insurance. Would you take this bet?

Pocket Aces have roughly 85% favor-ability preflop against a random hand. These are great odds for you. However, does this mean I would accept the conditions. No way! Some things are not for sale and this example reminds me of good bankroll management.

By the way, to answer the original question: "Is poker gambling?" My favorite response when asked this is: "Maybe the way you play it." Seriously though, any time a wager of some kind is placed based on a probabilistic outcome, then it is gambling of some form. By this logic poker is considered gambling: yet I will also note that some players gamble more recklessly than they should. Good poker play is, among other things, about good risk management skills.

I think that poker is certainly a gambling game: it involves wagering of money and elements of luck and uncertainty.

I think what you're referring to is how much risk is involved, and thru skillful play we can certainly decrease risk and minimize the 'gambling' component of the game.

But that doesn't change that at it's root, this is a game of chance which falls into the gambling spectrum :fight:
