You can sitout at any time you want. Blinds will continue to be taken from your stack when it is your turn and antes every hand (if you are at level when there is ante). This eventually will eliminate you if you do not return fast enough to the table. These are the rules so i don't think that you are ruining anything by leaving. The only thing you ruin is your own game.
