I've played quite a while, feel pretty confident in my game, spent the last year or so studying, and wanna give it another shot after taking most of the last year off... this is more of a community discussion (not really about me) about bankroll management, but wanna get some input


"I have a $2k online poker bankroll, play primarily NLHE, and live in the US, and want to be sustainable"... what kind of bankroll road map should I have if I want to:

play just ring games?
just SNG's?
just MTT's?
all 3?

It really depends upon where the strength in your game is. You should focus your efforts where you are profitable.

As someone said play your best games if it's cash that would give you 40 buyins at NL50 which is recommended for a good player I believe

Play where you are strong. You want to make money. For me, this is tournament poker. And I would play at low and medium limits. Upon reaching a certain amount, we will move on to high limits.

I think you should play all 3 mix it up gets tiring playing the same format all the time I would throw in the odd bit of Omaha and jackpot games if playing on ACR.
Would keep grinding freerolls until my roll was over 100k too,
Your rolled well for $50 buy ins anything more than that is putting your roll at risk of downswing and bust.
Would be tempted to withdraw a $1000 put it out of reach in case tilt monster or serious downswing strikes.

All on spin&go's - $100 buy in (just kidding)

hi, I would advise you to play regular sng tables 100 buy-in limit turbo tables 200 buy-in limit if you are going to play MTT and want to earn poker in the long run without the risk of going broke, then 500 buy-in limit for your eyes will be enough for poker tournaments.

I would play all three directions. Somewhere it will turn out and it will be visible on what to focus attention.

I agree that playing a mix of games is the way to go. Variety is the spice of life.

You should play whatever has earned you that bankroll. But if I had a 2K bankroll to play with, I would want to play mid-range cash games because they offer the biggest bang for the buck, but in all honesty would probably blow it on a super high stakes game. I do not have good bankroll management skills.

2k and you let it sit wow wish I was in your shoes , I’d say keep doing what got you the 2k , but if u earned it on low stakes I’d probably do higher stakes and check my skills

I'm doing something similar right now after taking the last few years off to study. I've found that when hopping back in the most important thing is to do what gives you the most enjoyment (unless you are playing professionally of course)

I found the Sit n Gos on America's Cardroom to be extremely soft in both the single table format and in the 'on demand' multi table format. The great thing too is that buyins run from $0.5 all the way up to $100, so you can play them while you build to $10k+

The ring games are also solid and if you like to multitable they're a great option. Blitz/Rush is available as well, personally I find it a bit too fast paced and more stressful than regular tables. They're a great way to get reps in and build comfort in deepstack situations

MTTs are fun and exciting but take a ton of time, I usually play them 1x a week at most because of the time commitment involved. That being said, by playing cash games and SNGs during the week I keep my game very sharp so I feel in rhythm for MTTs.

Buyin wise with your roll I would play $10-50 games/tables if I were in your spot. On days I'm feeling super sharp I'd push the upper limit, and on days I'm feeling more tired but want to stay in that poker mindset I'd play on the lower limit and still get reps in.

Another thing that's very valuable to consider is what you want to study (if anything), I found the easiest way to get back up to a high level of poker is to go thru a poker course or two which is well structured and then play the same format taught. Lots of great options out there!

I would advise in any case do not play all three directions! From the mathematical and the psychological point of it is completely different types of poker! For stable earnings luchsheigrat cache Nl 25 Nl 50 sorties on! Good luck!

You need to choose what is best for you, everyone loves a different look. I would choose mtt

Surprised no one asked for more clarification on what you mean by "sustainable". Does that mean you are trying to make a sustainable living off of it?

Also, general discussion wise, just start off at the lower limits of what you are bankrolled for as studying the game and implementing it will be massively different against other players who have also studied the game. Once you are confidently crushing those games, consider moving up, but there's no rush to play at a higher limit based off your bankroll.

As already said, play where you have the highest ROI and that you enjoy playing. With that bankroll, I recommend playing a $ 4 AVG, about 500 buy in at that level. MTT has a lot of variance, don't fall for the 100 buy-in story. Today poker is much more difficult than they say. Good luck.

i would play $3-5 abi and satellites on MTT

I think it depends on your strengths. If you are a stronger cash game player i would stick with that. If you are a stronger tournament player id go with sng.

Wouldn't play multiple formats. You couldn't easily lose in one wiping out profit from another.

The 3 types of game have different strategies, only you play in the one that you feel most comfortable and where you have greater profits.

So I myself have a bit of experience building bankroll and supporting myself I stick to certain rules I think people over simplify this to often.

I play Mtts and SNGS but its the format and what type of game you play that influences bankroll management.

for timed tournaments where I cash around 1 third of the time I find a 30 buyin rule is perfectly adequate however for the usual MTTS I stick to a 100 buyin rule. but then are we talking MTTS with a few hundred runners 50 runners or MTTS with thousands of runners as this will lead to differing variance.

For SNGS I play dons and heads up hypers. Dons dont cause a lot of vaiance and I tend to find a 30 buyin rule is absolutely fine. heads up hypers do have a lot of variance and I stick to a 100 buyin rule for these.

there is also other factors then just the formats you choose to play, eg the number of games you play at once will reduce your roi which usually means you need a stricter bank roll management rule. I Keep a constant watch on my results and the variance etc to gage what I should be sticking to and clearly my bankroll management rules are if anything to strict, but considering I now go almost half and half with day job and poker to pay bills I cant afford to take reckless bankroll management rules that could bust me if it goes bad.

I would play sit go tournaments that's where you make your money unless you are good at tournament play if you got hours to spare from your life and that's what it takes cash games you can make a good bankroll that way but you got to be good know what you are doing

I enjoy playing in freerolls as I need my money for other expenses. I do make money in them but it is a long and arduous time to get where I want to be. It's pretty hard considering that's all I play.

If you take it extreme seriuosly, find a game you can beat the most (specialise) and play it a ton - within conservative bankroll guidelines.
But this approach could be very boring ...you also could play a mix, if you like different formats and also beat them..
