Hello, this is my first thread, and since is the first one there is one question I would like to ask you all, and that is "how you started playing poker?". Maybe some family memeber taught you about it, or you watch it in youtube and thought it was cool and you try it?


For me it was looking at my dad play at pokerstars when I was a kid, he used to play a lot and sometimes he even ended up falling asleep while playing freerolls. Then, one night when he fall asleep I continued playing for him and ended up winning, imagine my excitement, after that I started to watch videos and study the rules and I have to say that I really like playing poker and I get so much fun with it.

So.. how you started playing poker?

As a kid, we had a pack of cards in the house but no gambling culture whatsoever.

Years later I would watch the odd poker video knowing nothing about the game (hand strengths etc.). After an extended period I realized (as well as the You Tube algorithm) that I was getting more and more fascinated with poker.

I then would thrill to watching the European Tour events sponsored by PokerStars from beginning to end. Likewise the WSOP.

Finally it occurred to me I should start playing the game myself (never yet playing a single poker hand) and so I joined PokerStars and learnt by playing 'play money' MTT's.

I started playing with friends, but after watching the wsop on ESPN. It was when the poker boom started, with moneymaker.

I saw some WSOP on the TV and then i saw what freerolls was about..

Both things make me wanna start playing this, you dream big.. every night.. every day

I started playing wsop ps3 game. It was really fun and you could compete with friends for bracelets.

I watched many poker tournaments before I started to play poker. And it's very exciting not just a gamble game like I thought. People go all-in, bluff or hit a monster on river and win a big pot,... All of the things led me to become interested in poker and I started to play poker.

i started with friends and after i stated play on line on fulltilt (2010)

My mother taught me how to play 5-card poker, years later I saw texas holdem on television, I downloaded pokerstars and started playing, I really liked it, to this day I still play.

I remember being very young and watching my parents, uncles and their friends play poker ..... from that day it was love at first blind, I say sight !! Good hands.

I started playing at the age of 16. I was out with some friends and when we entered a bar restaurant. they started to play poker. I didn't understand anything about this game, but I immediately wanted to learn to play. I won with each surely thanks to the luck of the beginner. but it was only when I finished my studies that I really started to get interested in poker and especially to want to improve my game.

I saw a poker program from Pokerstars on TV. It was a kind of advertisement. Since then I have been playing poker.

I started play poker because my parents and my friends play at this moment and then I saw WSOP on TV and I decide learn and start play this beatiful game 🙂

I started playing poker through another card game called truco, I don't know if it exists out there, but there was an online site where I played a lot of truco and after a while they implemented poker in the online room, I had no idea of as if playing, then I would enter the tables and watch people who knew how to play. Just looking at it, I started to catch a bit of the morning game, because I learn very quickly any game related to cards, so I went to search the internet for rules and hand groups, after that it was a way of no return, I fell in love with the game

I had heard about poker for a long time, I knew the rules, but I didn't play for a long time, I was busy with other things, but I regularly watched tournaments wherever I could.
After a while I decided to try to play, it turned out to be a profitable business, so I decided to take it very seriously.

eu comecei a jogar poker aqui no Brasil na minha infância no vídeo game o jogo pokerstates aí uau foi top não sabia o que era direito mas sabia que ia ficar na minha vida o que mais tarde seria meu esporte predileto , mas iniciei em 2009 quando joguei na plataforma do PS, um amigo no play money cash convidou pra jogar dinheiro real comprei alguns dólares e comecei joguei $4.4 180 pessoas e cravei meu terceiro torneio lol , pensei quero viver do poker . Mergulhei de cabeça mas não fui muito longe pois não me dediquei o bastante pra migrar para o lucrativo hoje amadurecido decidi alguns dias voltar pra jogar pra ser lucrativo entender as regras e ter uma estratégia sólida de jogador regular ganhador , comecei daqui de baixo estudando o básico e jogando todos freeroll que eu puder . e poder me tornar um dos lucrativos regulares fazendo o certo não como jogava só pra e divertir agora quero me tornar jogador lucrativo .

I have like zero interest in the "thrill of gambling" and to this day, things like betting on horse racing or casino slot machines never appeal to me. I am not 100% against these things if someone gets enjoyment from it, but I guess I just don't see how you would win at these long-term. Horse racing (and other sports betting) has "odds" factored in, so you are never really "ahead" through much research and statistics because chances are someone has already factored that information into the "odds" and slot machines are a joke because of them literally pre-set by the casinos.

I don't know, I guess I just had little interest in poker because I put it under the same category of chance while underestimating the value of skill and psychology that poker offers and these other forms of entertainment do not.

I more or less learned the rules of poker in elementary school from some friends of mine (obviously we didn't gamble with real money) and I had a little fun with poker, but it was just another card game like go-fish or war. It was kind of fun for us to have massive piles of poker chips all over the floor though and then imagine we were playing for millions or something lol - to be honest, I don't even think half of us knew how hand kickers worked: we just knew basics like a flush beats a straight.

I guess I wasn't ever really against poker, it just didn't interest me a whole lot. However, I always did seem to have an interest in psychology and a knack at reading people. It wasn't until a college student of age 23 woke up from bed one morning and literally thought to himself: "hey, I bet I could be good at poker." I then started learning poker more seriously as just a challenge to myself. I literally was learning just for the love of the game and as a way to put my psychology skills to the test. Since then, I've actually been enjoying my poker improvement and been doing better than I would have even thought.

In my quest for improvement, my first big step (just after learning all of the rules and subtle points of the game) was finding a poker forum community I could interact with. It was that day I created my account here at cardschat.com and the rest is history as they say

I started in 2009 11 years later I'm starting over from the basics because I was just a player for fun but now that I have great schedules and ROI.

i like card games in the country we play truco a lot and a friend invited me to play poker and since then it's been part of my routine to play poker!

My husband has been playing poker since he was about 12 with his friends. When online poker started, he then started playing there. I would watch him quite a bit, and gained interest. So then I opened up an account and started playing when he would play. That was about 11 years ago I think.

I have a friend who also plays poker.
Then I look at it and found it very interesting.
So I have been playing poker at Pokerstars for about 3 month.

My little brother bought a new computer with the money he earned from online poker, and I was wondering)

It is funny you make note of something here - I am not a gambler either.

It is a cliche within poker that whenever someone makes such a claim, other will call BS and say of course everyone who plays poker is a gambler. Not so.

I have never gambled on anything other than poker. Not once.

I became interested in poker exactly because of this. I would take calculated risks in my life when I knew the outcome depended on my hard work and basic smarts. But gambling has never appealed. What fascinated me with poker was the ability to constantly take a beat, often when making the right play, with the ability to put that defeat aside and play on, focus on the task at hand. It was a skill set I did not possess but wanted to develop.

Stepping over the line even with play money was a challenge at first, but then the thrill of winning an hand quickly became the reward I thought it might, and the rest, as they say, is history!

I start playing poker with some friends.
First we play live poker with cents...
After a while we play with more money
and online @ PokerStars

hello lol make me smile when i remember how i start with poker game hheheh i start from tagged page and then i facebook texas holdem but when one friend tell me thats you can play and with realy money on line poker and i say i will try and this with real money and now still im playing maybe 12 years

I watched the tournaments on television and they seemed so great, people wearing glasses so they wouldn't read if he bluffed or not, other people trying to get his peer out of his control, others like the case of Negreanu who saw him even joke In the most difficult situations, then I said to myself one day that I wanted to learn to play poker, I started with all the Poker Stars courses and my dad and bingo lessons, I downloaded the PS software and since then I have loved playing poker.

My parents played poker...I never watched them play, but I became curious in first year university and got hooked.

I love to play any card games, but texas holdem I started to play on Facebook, on the Zynga platform.

I wanted to make some extra money for the strip clubs.

my premier exposure to poker was "strip poker", no sure how we played, seems females all lost quickly, i sure did lol hummm... can't remember much, too many cocktails

2 years ago i briefly date boy who like play poker
at my university, poker games usually happen 24/7, in the education faculty lounge, or student union building

i hung out in education building watch bfriend & perpetual poker games (it just boys play)
learn basic rules as a spectator - i never play

(poor student me) amazed amount of money they wager - pots often in access $100
no chips just cash monies

I started playing after watching a tournament broadcast on TV. I was hooked as soon as they said that you could earn money playing from home and to be honest until that moment I did not know anything about this beautiful game.

I started playing in 2011 thanks to two cousins who had been doing it for a long time, they told me that it was profitable because you win in dollars and you could grow the bank with free tournaments. So it was that I started until now and it was not a lie, now most of my money comes from online poker.

I started playing with friends and my brothers in small tournaments after eating some delicious barbecue.

then we continue when the online rooms appeared and finally the big live tournaments !!

This last the best hopefully soon they return those tables live.

I have been playing poker for 10 years. I started playing out of boredom when I had a lot of free time. Poker is my favorite hobby which in addition to pleasure also brings me profit.

I would play 5 card stud and 7 card with friends back in high school for super small stakes.

As a kid, we played a game called pit. Then we played 5 card stud to feel like we were grown ups.

You asked a question that I don't even remember when it all started. I learned to play 25-27 years ago. Apparently I read about poker somewhere and became interested in the rules, although I was not involved in gambling and was not interested in gambling. My first game was five-card poker, or, as it is sometimes called, Russian poker.
But don't think that all this time I have been playing poker nonstop, I was on a 10-year hiatus. The second wave of my interest arose about 8 years ago.

I started only on impulse with some friends in Peru 2012 and from there I play when I can especially in this quarantine.

I saw a report on a poker series on TV, I don't remember exactly, there was also an ad for PokerStars, so I started playing poker, first playing for conditional chips, then tournaments, freerolls, that's it ))

First time I played poker was on play money and... I didnt like it, because it wasnt real poker (but I didnt know it at that time) A few months later I saw poker in tv, and I liked it instantly, because it was more like the other game than I have played on play money. So I registered on first poker site (stars) and thats how I starter to play

For me I had a neighbor who came over to help me with some stuff in my apartment. And I had just gotten a used laptop. It was probably around 16 years ago I think. He pulled out a deck of cards and said let me teach you how to play NL Hold'em poker he taught me the basics in a few minutes LOL. And then he showed me the site absolute poker, where he was playing on and I started playing there. There was a lot of good free rolls back in the day and all different poker forums that had their own private freerolls so it was a fun time

I had been watching the WSOP on TV in the early 2000's. Then a buddy and I went to Vegas. We mostly played blackjack but I wanted to check out Binion's. We made the trek from The Strip and they happened to be starting a low stakes tournament when we were there, so we jumped in.

Quite confident I didn't make it more than a level or two. I had no idea of hand strength, positional value, nada. What a disaster.

But at the same time it fanned the flames.

I also played the WSOP game on Xbox, entered local tournaments, trips to Vegas and Reno, online, yadda yadda yadda.

I guess I started playing like most people.. I was back in college when couple friends of mine invited me over their place to teach me poker.. but it's been just a cards game for me since April this year, when I decided to study really hard and realized poker is everything but just a cards game
