You are in front of the computer studying poker, trying to figure out which way to go, trying to find out, and you end up losing focus with family members saying that this is a waste of time, that it is bad luck, that in front of me I will see the lost time. it ends up deconcentrating us. what should be done?

is there a step by step?

Challenge your family members to play HU 4 rollz

Honestly, my family was a bit skeptical until they saw I was winning consistently. At that point my dad was curious and asked if I could explain what I'm doing that makes it so I win.

If they're not open to having that conversation anything your say will likely fall on deaf ears

I come from a family of non-poker players myself and though I was lucky that they were kind (though understandably skeptical), it was through the rest of time and a decade + of being a poker pro that made them see the light!

Although I do believe it’s changing little by little, the fact is that most people still think poker is the same as gambling at any casino table game. As others have said, it will be far easier to convince yourself not to care what your family thinks about you playing poker than to convince them that it’s a game of skill right away :)

It would be much easier if they gave themselves the opportunity to get to know poker, as I am new to the field and dedicate myself for hours against the PC, whether studying or practicing freeroolls, first comes knowledge, not profit, and they don't understand it seems that we are addicted and one day we will get sick, because we are dedicating ourselves to a game of chance. as the name already says. they have a block, they don’t accept, I’ve already called, I’ve shown it from a distance but it’s not possible.

Just like Katie did and wrote above, prove them with the results. Study hard, become good and level up, there is no need to explain anything. They won't believe, until you show the results. You don't have to coach them at poker or explain them how mathematical understanding of odds or thinking in ranges helps to improve your results, as they are not going to play it seriously. Save your energy for studying yourself.

It's great, that you're a head over and understanding, that poker is not about luck, well done on that. Now develop your skills and discipline and if you will sustain, you'll have much success, no doubts.

p.s. And by the way, for those who think, that poker is just a game of luck - how can they explain, that poker is an acknowledged mind sports meanwhile? Just like chess. How can they beat such an argument? :)

What pleases you does not please everyone

If you do something you love, and it costs minimal money to enjoy yourself for an evening a couple times a week, just like the movies you go out, you pay $50. you have a good time and experience hopefully unforgettable night. Poker you can go out spend $50 have a good night with the friends and play cards. if there's no harm there is no power my believe. good luck on the table that everyone. And as always have fun

I believe it´s not matter of showing whether or not it´s a game of chances, but that there is a study and a lot of dedication behind it just like any other sport

Hey. I will not suggest a specific strategy, but I will tell you by my own example. I only play alone, I try not to watch movies, TV shows, streams at the same time, I don’t correspond in chats, I don’t read literature, I don’t listen to music. I always try to fully immerse myself in the game.:star:

Of course poker is a game of chance. And luck is essential. Your family is afraid that you will become very addicted. Are worried. Maybe they will get used to it over time.:)

Sim, sorte e sorte estão envolvidas, sua família está certa.

I don't think they are right that poker is a game of chance, poker has already proven that it goes far beyond a game of chance

no doubt, but I already have that certainty and conviction that poker is not a game of chance, but of skill.:)

It is a game of chance, if it wasn't Phil Hellmuth would win every time, just ask him he will tell you.

I don't want to be mean but most of the people and especially many players do not see (or refuse to see) the truth about poker. Instead of pollyanaishing and being extremely optimist, I will tell you the harsh truth and grim reality about online poker. With so much rake and competition 95% of people fail and only 5% make consistent living out of poker. I can understand your family being skeptical that you will make the 5%.

Close to my thinking. I was going to say something similar I remember from the poker movie Rounders. Something like:

"Some people think poker is just luck. It can't be just luck. If it was, then how do you explain the same pros making the final tables consistently?"

p.s. I caught the poker joke with Hellmuth claiming that he would win if there was no luck (He might be correct though! No real way of finding out of course though)

Also, by "close to my thinking" I meant that the "pro part" was similar - even if I believe poker might be less luck than you believe.

Yes, luck and luck are involved, your family is right.
It is a game of chance, if it wasn't Phil Hellmuth would win every time, just ask him he will tell you.

Poker is a mental sports and a game of skill with the element of luck in it. It's like chess, but better. Why is better? Because in chess the newbie won't play for money with grossmeister, until he has too much and want to do somekind of weird charity act to him.
In Poker you can see this all the time, all that thank to this element of luck.

I always love to repeat one poker quote, when it comes to that "Luck/Skill in Poker" topics:
Poker is 10% of skill and 90% of luck if you take just 1 day and 90% of skill and 10% of luck if take 365 days.
That's so true and it's crucial to understand the concept of poker distance and variance.

Totally right, I would say even more about 8-9% of all players are in plus on long run and maybe 10% more breakeven. That's how it is. But it doesn't mean, that it's impossible.

The numbers are like that because absolutely most of the people take poker as their fun hobby. They hardly study it or not enough. They don't input enough (or at all) hours to learn math, strategies behind it, to create ranges and analyze hands, not buying GTO, tracking, flop analyze software, coaching, courses in order to become stronger and level up.

They just play micro limits now and again after work or at weekends for fun. Making sometimes shots for bigger limits, bust their bankrolls and comeback to freerolls or micros again. They don't make things complicated studying everyday and input numbers in their bankroll sheet after each game. No table select, no game plan, no game analytics.
They don't do all that work, which Pros and Ambitious Regs do. And that's where the difference come from.

Professionals are not more lucky, they just input much more work and hours in this game and that is why they're better.

Just win a Sunday Million and they'll stop thinking like that, I assure you

I agree, but the irony is, that exactly this will be 95% of luck - winning one huge field MTT. :D
So the conclusion is: If you want to impress people, who far away from understanding what poker is all about - show them a single big win in a Multi-table Tournament. If you want to impress a Pro or a good Regular - show them your upward going graph after 3000+ tournaments played. :)

Poker is just a game of skill, because there are fish, these are bad luck. If we only had sharks, only the poker house would win. You only make money with poker if you win big (game of chance), or if you have a lot of skill, then you have some luck so you won't be swallowed by variance.
