Have you ever wondered what it is like to be a poker dealer - or given serious thought to becoming one? Read this article and let's talk about it.

Poker Dealer Guide

I think I would love it in many ways - I have always loved to be the dealer when playing card games including poker.

But - I don't think I would be very good at it. I think sometimes I would get stumped on the math - at my age you get brain freeze sometimes doing things like that lol.

I would also struggle with dealing with rude and drunk players.

I have a lot of respect for poker dealers.

Seems like an interesting job for someone who really likes to play poker or be around a casino and make guaranteed money. My only issue is that $21,000 for an average salary is not very much at all especially if your working long hours. Seems like a job for someone really young or around retirement age.

Great post I have thought about becoming a dealer. The articular had great info. The construction industry just isn't doing it for me lately and as i get older it's just hard on the body.

I think that the main rule to become a delaler is to know all the rules of poker and have discipline and authority, also be skillful with hands, I think that no poker player likes to play with inexperienced dealer

That was always my downfall. There ain't a hope in he-- I'd be able to do that math on the fly, calculator or no calculator.

It's funny you bring this up. I just talked with a poker dealer last night about giving a shot at being a dealer. I will have to go to what the poker room calls "Dealer School". They teach you everything about being a dealer and how to do the split pots etc. I am seriously thinking about it and have to make my decision by the end of this month.

I am not sure where MK2053 came up with the $21,000 a year figure, the average figure at the poker rooms near me are more like $50,000 a year. I guess better tipping goes on in this area.

Straight out of the article...

This question is like asking how long a piece of string is. The way that poker dealers are paid means determining the actual amount you can make isn't easy. However, at most casinos in the US you will receive minimum wage payments for the duration of your shift and, according to the BLS, the average mean salary for a poker dealer in 2011 was $21,930.

The local dealers claim they make about $5 per hour plus tips. I would guess they are somewhere around $15 per hour after tips. The problem is local where I play there are a few good dealers but most are really bad and on top of that they split tips amongst all the dealers. I have a hard time with this since the good dealers get the same percentage as the horrible dealers. Would be a cool job but I imagine stressful at time and probably not worth the small amount of pay. Plus local if you deal you can't play at that casino which is another reason I would not do it!

I actually used to be a dealer at one of the private local clubs I played at. They were short staffed one night, I was a regular and offered. Turned into a part time job. I loved it, you got to watch the game more and from an unbiased point of view. The only downside is that YOU CAN'T PLAY!

I have lived close, even across the street from casinos and have elected to not work there because it prevents you from playing inside. In a place like Vegas this might not be a big deal with so many casinos but in a small town with only one it really cuts your options down lol.

Now there are a lot of dealer games that arise from the community because of this and if you have ever watched the dealer tournament at the wsop they can be some really cut throat games! However for me..I'm good on this side of the felt..at least for now.

Time and availability I will be sober for work, and the pay is very good for what I understand. Maybe it's a matter of practice, although in my city sadly there are no casinos with poker

Small salary but if you deal for big money games then you might get some pretty insane tips. Just make sure the rich guys hit their draws.

I think this article is somewhat misleading as far as pay goes. Sure, a cash dealer may average $30/hr in tips FOR THE TIME ACTUALLY SPENT DEALING. In an 8 hour shift that could be as little as 4 hours depending on how many tables are running and how many dealers are working. If it's slow you could get sent home early. And a lot of casinos prefer to hire part time.

Learn from my mistakes, just go to a dealing school. Becoming a proficient dealer takes a lot of practice. Going to a school will give you that practice and it will be much easier getting hired. You will also deal faster from the beginning and more hands = more tips.

wow, this looks awesome really
However, my brother works on a cruise ship in American waters and earns under 2k per month. He has a dealer 5 rank, which means he deals even dice on top of it. It would be more than great if he could manage to deal under these rates
Thank for sharing Debi :)

It's easiest to be a dealer in home tournaments - you do not need to go through long training and get a special certificate, if you plan to become a professional dealer in poker, you need to consider several important points:

very interesting description of this work . it never occurred to me to work as a dealer. my friend's wife worked in a casino, and I know for sure that they make good money in order to live comfortably.at the moment, of course I would like to try this work, but we have closed all the casinos and now they are only remote corners of our country. and it's mostly for young people.

In homegames will deal cards when everybody gets a turn.
It is a job though suppose like any other with its pros and cons in casinos.
Could be doing a lot worse backbreaking jobs out in all weather in construction sites
or whatever.:)

I was watching a video, I will post it if I find it again, where it was a heads up omaha game. Players gone all in. Both of them read the hand wrong at the river, while the attentive dealer found that although the player may missed his draw, improved to two pairs with the river card.

Long story short, I would hate to be a dealer on omaha:D Even at home games, others get angry when I deal wrongly two cards once instead of one card per player twice. I would probably lose my job in the very first day if I did it at a casino:p

I think this job is suitable for young people, if I was 15 years younger , I could try,but I'm already old for this. But in home games, when the cards are dealt, everyone can try himself as a dealer.

I respect poker dealers.

Sometime they get the angry of many players who tilt after a horrible badbeat, but that's the nature of their profession. I wouldn't become a poker dealet though. It's true that the tips are solid, but only if we are talking about the big live events, the Highrollers, etc
