I suspect that almost everyone here is a fan of ROUNDERS, the movie starring Matt Damon, Edward Norton, and John Malkovich.
many have probably more recently seen Molly's game...starring Everybody.

there are some other films where poker plays a part, but rarely is it the focus of the plot. Even when poker is the plot, typically, they don't really get the facts right, and they never get the feel of the game right.

I'm thinking there is a gap in the market here for a good poker film...and am toying with the idea of making it/getting it made.

Does anyone want to see another poker movie?

Starting to toss around a number of ideas for a plot. Do not post anything here you do not want to get stolen. I'm not paying for ideas...nor am I likely to give you any credit!

GO!

Cheers,
JT

I watch one that here in brazil the name is “Maximum Bet” and in the original it is “Thriller” with Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake and shows the story of a poker player who invests his college money at the tables and at first wins a lot but over time he begins to lose his profits and investment in online poker and then Justin Timberlake the player begins to notice that some new players enter the tables and start winning with insane moves, so disgusted with his losses he decides to go after the owner of the multi-millionaire site Ben Affleck who charges a Justin Timberlake's father's gambling debt that tries to pay this debt from his father working undercover for the Police to Ben Affleck in the end I don't remember the ending lol so I think I'll watch it to see the ending because I don't remember it lol.

I think I saw that one. It was decent. Not sure how much was realy about poker though...
Often times poker "happens" or is one event in a film...but rarely do we get as much poker juice as in Rounders.

Sounds like a ripp off from Rounders lol.
Matt Damon also plays a student who invests all his college money .
Also he lost against a shady cardroom owner played by John Malkovich.
Then He borrows money from his college professor to be able to go back to destroy him.
See the parallels ?
Bet that would be suable 🤣

Nobody with Ben Affleck in a film is going to be sued by people with Matt Damon in a film.
In any case, the two movies are not at all alike.
They certainly don't feel alike in any way.
Rounders is gritty. MaxBet is glitzy.

Lucky, sharpie, big game, Californian poker. I watched the last new movie, it's called pokerface, but it didn't impress me, there were a lot of ads, and there wasn't much poker specifically.

I think I only saw one poker movie and it was a James Bond movie, I think it's called Casino Royal. Hopefully there will be many more poker movies coming out.

Rounders was realistic in a lot of cases that makes it very appealing.

You have the grinder that knows a game well enough to make enough to support his family and get ahead sitting in a chair for a living instead of doing hard manual work vs a kid that has pie in the sky dreams of making it big and will not take fabulous opportunities either going to law school or just winning at the lower levels consistantly who is willing to sacrifice everything because he wants a big score.

That movie defined all the get rich quick folks that were willing to give up all their great opportunities to play poker.

The characters were too silly and too Hollywood dramatic and the situations were too over the top but its Hollywood. John's a great actor but that "Russian" accent was too silly. And serious players do not talk that much trash like that at a live table.

I've only seen one poker movie. “KidPoker. Poker legend.” The film is not only about poker, but also about professional player Daniel Negreanu. I loved it and encouraged me to play.

I love 'Mollys Game'. The poker scenes in that film are fun in a way poker players and those who don't know the rules can both understand what's going on. It's dialogue heavy, but I recommend it if that doesn't turn you off.

Rounders is an ok film, but with poker it seems we'll take what we can get! I wonder what kind of film rounders would be if it was made today instead?

I still love the scenes in Casino Royale, eventhough those poker scenes are highly unrealistic.

I think there needs to be more modern poker movie.

Less of the insane live poker reads etc and more along the lines of........

Multi table online grinder, learning the game, getting better, starts a twitch channel, gets a girlfriend, but at the same time is moving up levels and unravelling a bit, can't play poker so much due to GF.....Has to make a choice....the girl or the game.
Luckily see girl cheating. so chooses poker, but loses the plot, as he still loves his GF, moves to Vegas, struggles to get anywhere, only playing the crappy small casino games, but then binks a massive score in a big game in Vegas. GF is randomly in crowd, she tries to apologise, says she still loves him.....you decide whether he gets back with her or not, so when I watch it at least there's still some surprise for me!

What do you think???

Poker movies are not about strategy, but about plots involving violence and other shenanigans to make a living through games.

What poker movies do you know and which ones did you particularly like?
Molly's Game
I like it

I like Rounders, 1998 with Edward Norton, Matt Damon and John Malkovich. But it’s a very negative movie about poker. For those who are brightening there’s a huge lesson: never bet more than you can afford to lose and don’t play in secret poker clubs or rooms.
I will not give spoilers, it’s worth watching.
