Zorba, wanted to clarify some things. My wife wants me to give up poker completely. I support everything that she wants and poker was one of the reasons that she was able to finish her associate degree. In response to the statement that one day I will make a living in poker. How do you think two people with no jobs can survive in a casino for the last 4 years? And when you say religion and poker don't mix is like saying you don't believe in God. Religion is based on faith. The greatest poker players in the world had to have some kind of faith that they would make it some day. God might not give that 1 outer but God can definitely give people faith.

veltins, I understand what you are saying because I know a couple of people who have won hundreds of thousands in the wsop and donked it off. I am not going to lie but I have won and donked it off before but I fixed that problem. The only problem is if the person closest to you does not support or believe in you, no matter what you are trying to do; it will affect you. It would be perfect if my wife would support all this but it would take time to win the main event or a bracelet. Remember, I did not jump into any big tournaments yet even when we had a quarter million dollars. It took so many years of poker to understand everything. Recently, my cashes have been growing bigger but I want to take it to the next level and play 1k and 10k buyins. I have learned not to donk it off in blackjack or slots anymore. The only problem is I need her support in all this along the way. Winning 25k is nothing compared to millions because thats the kind of money that can change lives and help people.

A question to ponder: Can you be happy with her if you quit poker, or do you think you'll be resentful, and playing behind her back? It's not a movie of course, but it reminds me of the conflict in Rounders...except Mike and his girlfriend were college kids, and not married.

Is there room for compromise? You could find a regular job, and allocate a reasonable amount of your income and time to poker as entertainment, and still keep your marriage if your wife is ok with it. Several successful players on the WSOP Circuit have jobs or run businesses, and have families. And they play poker for fun, instead of as a job.

One of them lives in my hometown and took down @ $128k at Choctaw Durant last January.

you can see the blackjack problem and its dangerous connection with poker. I had that problem for a while and I understand how even a $1 bet can lead to a 10k bet ........

The best way I dealt with that problem was always try to keep your earnings in a bank account or in the safe in the hotel room or even have the casino give you a check.

Another way is to understand you can't make money through blackjack.... but you can have it as a little hobby betting minimum and never going over your head.

After toning it down,

Not to be a dick but this ^ sounds a tad like denial. .... maybe addicted but attempting to control it.

I'd think the solution to the 'blackjack problem' would be > don't play blackjack.. 'ever'.

If I were you, I would go to college and re-evaluate where you are and want to be.

The fact that you say you may blow all of your winnings, is obviously a landmine.

Sweet run though hitting that BBJ and buying a house , atleast that was smart.

I vote take time off, get your head together and then re-evaluate.

Well, it's not easy but I think that you did not learn with the mistakes or with the lessons that life had reserve to you.

If I were you I stop play Money games, any type of them, and try to find a job.

And nothing replaces a family...

It sounds like you're a marginal winner at cards, whether it be because of tilt issues, leaks, and/or a limited skill edge to begin with. I don't get the impression that you've ever been a world beater at poker, and the game is only going to trend towards getting tougher over time.

And it's a hard (virtually impossible) thing, to maintain a highly profitable game in the face of a limited bankroll and severe life tilt issues. You're going to need to come to grips with leaving the casino/gambling lifestyle behind. Good luck.

You have decent story but from what you have said, I don't think you are a true professional players because your game's variance affect you play and even your living. I know it is hard to have cool mind but you have to be disciplined. I don't know why there were blackjacks and slots in your poker career. You will 100% lose (long-term) to the house with blackjacks and slots. I really respect guys who are professional and make a good fortune from playing poker only. But everything good will come to an end sooner or later, I believe! Poker world is much tougher these days and I'm not sure it is a good idea to go pro anymore. You have to be very smart. You have to be among the elite guys. You have to beat not only fish but also other shark as well. It is not always easy like in text books.

Personally I was a persistent winner at 400NL and 600NL at pokerstars from 2008 - 2010 but now I can barely beat 25NL. The game has gotten much tougher and I was left behind because I do not adapt well enough. I'm also 29 right now, I still like playing Poker sometimes, still see opportunities in the game but also see a lot of drawbacks of the game that can affect my life and my character. So I decide to let Poker be a hobby, rather than a daily grinding. There's a life outside poker buddy. Control poker, do not let it control you.

Good luck with your choice anyway!

Cool story Bro.

And I say that probably for the first time not sarcastically!
Really good insight your on the right track.

Trust that the universe will support you in whatever hustle you venture into for a good cause.
Poker is the wrong game to work for the good cause you should give back and contribute to those who need it as a career by the sounds of it.

There are many products services and opportunities out there that make better more reliable full time incomes poker should remain a side business until you make it big and prolificly

It is funny when some players state that they play poker to give money for charity. They are like Robinhood, take money from the rich and give to the poor :)) I wanna ask the author do you have any feeling when you stack off your opponent?

potentially ruin one life temporarily if they are gamblers or in over their depth and give to another lol.

I honestly feel poker is and should be a side income/hobbie and we should always have a main source.
Its pretty much a lazy way to try and make a living and it robs the life out of you and takes away alot of value from life if you get into it too thick, like original poster
even if he was a good player hes still losing in life because pokers wrath
stops you experiencing what life is

F that dude. Go for broke...then go buy yourself a better wife with your winnings...preferably one who does not have a history of drug abuse. It alters the chemistry of the brain, you know?

I personally am a believer that one can achieve all that is proposed in the meantime it performs is instructed for this purpose ... there are times in general often dreams are not quickly met, so it is a dream , others seen as something distant and stay on the road , my dream is to win the sunday million and still have never played .. but I have faith that I will achieve this tutulo agun day be mine , meanwhile suffer and lose and that I does try to improve , the effort I have to add the value of what each one does not lie vacuum thinking that can not be achieved , everything comes in life and one day my dream will come true .

This isnt a decision people can make for you, it is something you will generally have to find out yourself. With that said everytime my G/F gets me upset or angry or if my head isnt clear I WILL NOT PLAY. This is has saved and built my BR.

As for the give up on poker dreams or risk everything, really a tough situation to be in. If it comes down to poker or your wife then you have to decide which one is more important.

Sorry to hear about problem and best of luck in your life!

If this is a true story, you should not be getting advice from a poker forum. Everyone here means well, but you have an addictive personality and need professional psychiatric advice.

This sounds to me that you are not happy with you. I think you should first care about yourself and what you are expecting from your life. I think poker is some kind of drug for you. It helps you for the moment. But that's no solution. Maybe you should talk with a therapist about this problem.

I'm no psychologist, but IMO if you were a healthy individual with a balanced and happy life outside of poker, this wouldn't be an all-or-nothing decision. As someone stated previously, you have an addictive personality that seems to result in your inability to pace yourself.

You need to quit poker and avoid gambling in any capacity. Seek professional help and find ways to make your life feel more fulfilling. Going "all in" on poker is NOT the solution.

I will dont take any risk or chances.. Planning is a better choice, if we succeed or not atleast we have still an option where to go or start again because we planned everything.. without planning you cannot focus on thinking where to start again because all you can think is how you lose everything in poker.. We must save 80 percent and 20 percent for the game..

it sounds to me that you've traded a drinking/drug problem for a gambling problem.... you try to justify your downturns with excuses and justify your reasons to keep playing as being purely charity and for the family or that god will help you support the poor.... of course the casinos are going to tell you to keep playing.... i'm assuming your wife loves you and her opinion is important

it sounds like maybe you should goto school or find another job.... maybe play small stakes for fun and build a bankroll.....

you need to be accountable for your situation and stop blaming it on an ex-gf or fighting with the wife, etc.... sure it would be nice to make a living at poker, but its very rare....

your biggest gamble is your situation with your wife... are you going to give up on her to pursue poker?

the whole vibe i get from your post is "delusional"

you know you shouldn't pursue a poker career and you're hoping that someone here will tell you to go for it...

at least take a break or play small stakes and focus on the fun rather than an income..

dreaming is not bad, but the whole life to spend in dreams-this is stupid!

Of course people need to achieve their goals. But easily achieve success in life impossible!
