Alcohol impairs your decision making. It makes you less inhibited. Not a good thing when you are playing poker me thinks.

I think my best ideas and intuitive insights are often filtered by anxiety. The slight decrease in inhibition of a single drink is great for me, in many intellectually challenging contexts.

I tried that programming once or twice, and it really helped. I coded faster, and better. Two drinks is too much, and clouds my judgement.

I haven't [recently] drank while playing poker, but I'm guessing one drink could be pretty ideal for me, most nights.

But I'm still building my foundational skills and experience, and I prefer sobriety most of the time, so it might be a while before I find out for sure!

For those non-drinkers, it might be a good idea to get club soda or something that appears to be alcoholic. I might be going crazy with this, but it seems people don't respect me as much as a player as they look at me drinking a beer every 30 minutes or so. At this rate it doesn't really do anything for me but calms my nerves.

I have heard this idea before. I have yet to try it though.

If I ever find myself in a sea of unknowns, perhaps I will try this out. However, most of the people at my casinos know me somewhat. I don't think it would work at my usual card room.

To be honest, drinking while playing poker (or any other "sport" where you need to be thinking) is one of the most stupidest things you can do. Along with taking drugs ofcourse. Sure, there are many people who think they play better when consuming alcohol, but you know those people are really no being honest with themselves. You WILL make costly decisions.

some good comments here, well the true grinder saying goes never drink well playing.

however... I'll drink live If I feel like drinking. It doesn't effect my game I play the same range and stay disciplined even after 7 or 8.

Im a hell of alot more talkitive drunk im like daniel neagranu im cracking jokes trying to get reactions from people asking them questions about their game for information and I think the fearlessness from the alcohol actually helps my game because of confidence I get respect at final table and people are weary about trying to bully me on raises and blinds

I am the same way. I actually have a stuttering problem, so when I relax a bit, I stutter far less.

I normally have a beer or a Captain and Coke to calm the nerves when I play live. I have found that when I play online after I have been drinking that it is not a good idea. If I win it is hard to stop playing. If I lose its easy to walk away however I still have to get myself out of the hole I put myself in.

Sometimes I have a glass or two of wine if playing at night..... Other than that I try to stay sober and focused. Drinking doesn't improve my game at all LOL.
