Hi all,

I’ve started learning and playing poker since September of last year. I immediately fell in love and have either played online or live with friends or at the casino pretty consistently. The game is just too good. I’ve made a post on Reddit asking how to improve and got some good books to read. I’ve watched so many YouTube clip compilations and vlogs, it’s great.

Now, I want to ask the people of this forum (this is my first post) honestly and truthfully. Is the dream to make money through poker still alive? With HUD online and people getting better and better..what does this mean for semi professional or professional play?

Are the gates sealed tight to become a winning player? How long would it take a hard working novice to move up the stakes and build a bankroll. You guys have more experience and I would love some advice. It’s quickly become a dream of mine to have income playing this beautiful game.

I just want someone to be real with me. Do only the top 10% of poker players even make money? How much money is there to be made if you put the work in?

There is nothing impossible in poker if you put enough efforts and follow your dream. You should be careful though, follow strict bankroll management, constantly read and improve your game (both poker skills and mental game) and learn how to control your emotions. Relatively few people manage to do that to the level needed to get to the big money and become top pro players.

Currently as relatively new player you are inspired and it is completely normal to be enthusiastic. My advice is to play and train seriously for few months and after that make evaluation of the situation answering following questions:

1. Is your game improving proportionally to the efforts you invested? Are you already winning player and how much?
2. If you see improvement - how much time and efforts it took to get here? Are you ready to invest even more efforts and take more risks to continue further?
3. What you feel when playing poker? Do you still like the game like in the beginning or your attitude changed?

After that you will know how to proceed further.

Of course the dream is still alive, all you want to achieve in this world is with effort, hours of work and study, and poker is no exception, if you can earn money from poker, but you have to be persevering and not get frustrated when you lose , play with enough energy.

Hello.
If you have a dream, work to achieve it, despite any comments. If you are a sufficiently patient and disciplined player, you will succeed. But you also need to understand that it will take years of hard daily work.
Good luck.

You started playing poker with the intention of making a lot of money, very well but knowing that in online poker this is difficult. Everyone here likes this game a lot and if we collect $ something is fine. I say all this because I have a few years since I played online and I do not have too many achievements, I must admit that my game is not too great :). Good luck!

Yes micro / lower stakes is still very beatable both online and live. With enough study moving through the levels of games is also possible.

I have definately become a bit jaded with the game over time, but that has more to do with governments and regulation problems than the game itself. Poker is actually a beautiful game :)

You definitely won’t be the second Negreanu or Holtz! But, with diligent effort and the most severe discipline in observing bankroll management, it’s quite possible to earn money for bread and butter.

It would be nice to do a survey on your topic. I play poker for a year, and not quite successfully, but not critically terribly.

Bank Management

I agree with this. Bank Management is probably the hardest thing to have self control over. It happens too often, that a player will say to himself: "Well, I've got $50.00 left, so I may as well go all out with it."

There's two problems with this attitude:

1.) You're already saying to yourself that you're going to lose it, anyway.

.....and....

2.) You'll probably try again, put more money in, and go through the same cycle again.

The end result is total frustration, exasperation, and financial loss.

Every $ in your bankroll is precious. Protect it, and use it very wisely.

For me , the dream isn't alive anymore.
But I do believe people can make money online.
If someone loses big online, someone also has to win that :)

About 10% of poker players make money, that's correct.
About 10% of that 10% make a ton of money (so around 1%)

Just like the rest of the careers out there it is the 1% who end up with 99% of the money, and anyone who is willing to work hard at the game, be disciplined and always improving will have a chance to realize that dream.

More information being available doesn't mean it's harder, it means whoever can interpret that data better and execute on a daily basis will get the results. ALI IMSIROVIC is a great example of someone who did this and rose the ranks from $0.01/0.02 to playing $300k high rollers on the regular. Discipline, Drive, Consistent effort and taking the right chances in the game and in building your network are some of the keys to reaching that success.

The first video is about study habits, the second is about personal management.

Hope that helps and good luck with your dreamweaving!

It needs patience, and it has many ups and downs. In the long term there are some stable incomes, which are rising as time passes. The most importand is that as you play you become better, which can help the income too!:playingba

Patience is the key to success. No one promises Golden mountains at once. But over time you can achieve impressive results

I am not good at cash, but in tournaments if I find benefit, my best advice is that you try to qualify for tournaments with the minimum invested and so when you win it is really very profitable, partypoker and 888poker are my favorites for that, it is the advice that you I can give:jd4::jd4::jd4::jd4:

+1 But then again my goal setting is currently fairly low ;) I don't have poker dreams of becoming a professional or winning the wsop, but I do wish to improve at poker and become "good at the game." Vague: yes. Is this dream coming true though? Absolutely.

If you follow what they wrote here, then in 5 years you can say that you are a successful player. It is possible. You can compare this with the dream of becoming a good chess player. Pro poker players are the same chess grandmasters.

In fact, if not mistaken, only 5% of poker players are profitable and live off the game. So if this is what you want, you will have to dedicate yourself a lot to achieve this goal. And I think the dream is still alive, because although today many more people know and play and know how to use the tools that poker has, there are many poker schools where you can enter and be a great player.

hi friend
it s normal to ask questions like this when you are new to the poker world,
and based on my small experience and what i learned and view untill now, it all depends on you and how much you want it, just beleive in yourself,
you alsi can learn from poker professionals story's, just watch on youtube story of phil ivey or tom dwan and a lot of others and you will understand what im talkign about, it all about you .

just keep following bankroll rules and it'll be fine, I won approx 300$ playing CC freerolls, but I was always withdrawing all my wins, I don/nt have discipline to build my bankroll. so if you do, everything will be ok. now I want to go on building the bankroll from the very beginning
