Poker could be a useful teaching tool in math classes, provided the kids are not using real money. That gets into a lot of legal issues.

I play poker with my kids, 12 , 10 and 10. Without the gambling part. Gamblings not really a healthy habit. I gambled as a kid with hockey cards and candy.

I answered the question as it was asked. The the OP included his thoughts about people under 18 opening accounts at PS in his content, but why is it assumed those are real cash accounts and not for play money? The word "gambling" is not mentioned even once by the OP.

Should we ban kids from playing poker outright... also definitely not.

I have chaperoned a lot of school trips where students play poker with phone calculators as their stack and they don't quite understand the game well enough, but they have a lot of fun.

For fun on one trip, I joined their game and unsurprisingly demolished them and simply explained that I was able to figure out what they had and if they were bluffing using logic.

For example, it is hard to represent certain cards on the turn or river if you didn't bet like you had those cards pre-flop or on the flop. It is a really good tool for teaching deduction, in my opinion and I noticed the kids become smarter towards the end of the trip.

Poker its not really gambling.
Spotsbooks and casino games are.
And I would have my doughts on Sportbooks but we will leave that discution for later.
The point here its that minor should be allowed to play poker but not for real money, Because thousands of reasons mainly if a minor start losings control and start depositing every time he loseses and becaue its a boy he wont have the bankroll education or even game knowledge of what hes doing.
Parents would be able to ask refunds and demanding and well maybe that couple of reasons are enough to prove that minors should be allowed to play poker for REAL MONEY.
How ever Im completly agree to allow them to play poker with play money/points because poker its way diferent than gambling.

Yes, he said "suitable for minors" in his title, and then went on to explain that he was talking about pokerstars accounts, so why in the world you would assume minors would be happy being able to deposit and gamble, but wouldnt??? No, he did not specifically mention the word "gamble" but he DID say "account at pokerstars".. Hmmm, no relation between the two for you?. So, in the English language at least, context is important. Poker: Gambling? I didnt decide anything. I have a very strong leaning. You just want to attack back, ok, I guess.... From an article exploring if poker is gambling:

• Semantically, 'yes' because poker, like most other activities involves taking risks for possible ultimate reward.
• Legally, the answer used to be 'yes' but slowly it is becoming 'no.'
• Pragmatically, 'yes' and 'no' depending on the player's ability to exploit the inherent flexibility in the game.

Giving minors the opportunity to play for money on a website (OP explicitly said kids with accounts on pokerstars and did not say only play money) is not a great idea.

I have no problem with any replies that disagree with my opinion, I only have a problem when someone calls me a "jerk" or other such needless derogatory terms. I completely disagree with some of what you are saying, but I can easily refrain from labeling it or you in nasty way, and I will conclude this by only asking you to do the same.

Quite a difficult question, but I am more inclined to believe that only adults can play poker. It is best not to violate the laws and rules of poker sites.

I believe that gambling can only be played from the age of 18, without any exceptions.

Playing recreational, yes, I think minors would enjoy playing. They could also improve on their skills. As far as gambling, no, they need to be 21 before they gamble.

The only way that minors should be allowed to play online poker is if it for freeroll. Even then there shopuld be some sort of limit about how long they can play per day and per week. Not sure how that could be done. Otherwiese they should not be allowed to play at all.

well i dont view poker as gambling . but it has potential to be abused as gambling if you are not careful . therefore i think people who have a personality that is prone to gambling and addiction in general should stay away from poker . and minors should not play poker at all . if it was up to me i would prohibit poker for people under the age of 21

Under 18 no online gaming. It is way to easy to lose big money and fast. Teenagers are by nature more willing to take risks. also have no own income in most cases.

I played poker and I was only 16 years old so I don't think experience will hurt but gambling is only allowed from 18 years

A lot more people lose their savings by day trading stocks than playing poker, so should we also ban lessons on finance from classrooms? I think poker can be very good at teaching kids about logic, decision making and accepting what they cannot control (variance in poker).

Gamble is common for kids, but the problem of poker is the enviroment. If you are monitoring the kid and giving them a safe enviroment i cant see why not, but the overall enviroment for poker either online and in real life is not as welcoming. They have slots, roulette and other types of gambling that are not games per say. Also online and in real life is not uncommon to see drugs, either to boost the attention spam for long sessions or for recreative purposes.

Poker is a gambling point Whoever says anything. Even adults in different countries are trying to protect themselves from casinos (and there are machines with cherries, berries and cartoon pictures, everything is so bright and funny) and, in particular, from poker. Because even adults are not always able to control themselves.

It should be illegal for minors to play online for real money and in casinos. The vast majority are not mature enough to handle the temptation to fall into excess.
The mature and disciplined will find ways around it and they may turn out to be the spearhead of the best players in the future.

Teaching Children anything is fine in a controlled environment, I taught my youngest Daughter how to play Black-jack before she went to Nursery Classes. Not! so she could beat the other kids in the playground, but it helped her to learn how to Count, the cards were colourful, and she was able to add the shapes together (Hearts, Clubs, Diamonds and Spades) and she became good at counting.
At Christmas she was always allowed a Snowball drink ( Advocaat, and Lemonade) so she didn't feel excluded from what all the Adults around her were doing, and Today she is a responsible drinker because it was never a Taboo subject.
When Children are told you cannot do this or that, because you are too young, makes it all that more appealing and adventurous, So you have to teach children by example.
Now when it comes to playing Poker, I have nothing against teaching them how to play, but it is Important to explain why they will not be allowed to play, by law. the same reason here in the U.K. they are not allowed to drink alcohol until they are 18. (21 in the States) the Government decides at what age they become a responsible Adult and can decide for themselves.
The strange thing is, here in the U.K.is they are not allowed to Vote, Drink or Gamble until they are 18, but they can Marry and have kids of their own at 16.
The Law of Mum and Dad is very different from the Law of the Land.
