My answer would be 'No', as the factor of luck plays too much of a role. More often than not not the most talented player wins the prize but rather the luckiest one.

Don't think luck has anything to do with it being a sport or not. It is a game of skill based on mathematics. Key word would be game.

Tournament poker can be named a sport. The edge is very blurry, you know. :)

No it is not a sport. I will also say like I have said many many times before there is no luck in poker it is simply probabilities and odds. When your or your opponents card hits on the river it is just the percentage of times that that card or hand is going to win. You might say when a fish keeps hitting his 10% hands to win that he is lucky but that is just a small sample and in the long run it won't keep happening. IMHO

no i don't consider it a sport only because poker involves 60% skill and 40% luck.

Of course it does, and it wouldn't be today that poker is a sport of the mind and is conquering more and more fans, where you find mathematics, probability and human actions how not to call this game a sport!

This topic has been beaten to death in other threads.

Look up the definition of what a sport is.

It does come down to semantics, but poker is a game and not a sport. The two do interact but not when the so-called sport involves sitting stationary sitting for long periods of time, not to mention casino food......

Is poker a sport? No. Some will claim differently, but some people believe the wackiest shit.....

Poker can be attributed to a sport because there is a competitive spirit between players as in sports, there is a winner and a loser, there are those who lead a healthy lifestyle and there are those who do not, there are those who develop and those who believe that this is not necessary.

Oxford dictionary definition of sport:

"an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment."

Cambridge dictionary:
"a game, competition, or activity needing physical effort and skill that is played or done according to rules, for enjoyment and/or as a job::"

There are other definitions depending on the context, like being a good sport, or sporting a new pair of shoes.

As I said in my earlier post, some people will say anything no matter what is actually factual. If you consider taking a piss in the break, or stuffing food in your mouth in between hands, or stacking your chips and so on as physical exertion, then it is no wonder you would consider poker a sport.

Poker, like sports, involves skill. But physical exertion?.... If you want to convince yourself that is true, let me know if you want some premium real estate in southern Florida. I have some great plots............

Words, and their meanings, matter. Changing the definition of a word only changes the facts in your mind but in the real world, the definition does not change simply because you have your own "interpretation"......

That's good to know. I've now only got to master the 40% luck part to become a top pro.

Poker is definitely not a sport. It's gambling. A loser gives money (or something else) to a winner, via a game of chance. But I agree with you, it's also a game of skill.

At the moment, for me, poker is just a game; sports becomes when you have poker income that you can support yourself without working:)

Lol yes, I'm aware this is kind of a loaded question. There are multiple threads over at Chess.com mulling over the question whether Chess could be called a sport, each with thousands of posts, and the only conclusion ever reached was that certain folks can be very opinionated about the definition of words, regardless what dictionaries have to say about the matter.
But it's nonetheless interesting to me to hear many different perspectives, as long as they're founded on some sort of reasoning for or against it.

I don't consider a sport because I think luck it's an important part of the game, specially if you're going to play only one time. I know luck can play a role in other sports too, but in poker a bad player can win one tournament only with luck and this does not happen in other sports.

poker is a sport, it is clear that in everything you do in life is always marked by a percentage of luck, there is luck in soccer, tennis, basketball, etc, it is always so, in poker luck is also present, but I consider it a sport because it is based largely on the skill of the player, that's why the more you study poker and scale levels you will realize that, a skilled player can never go bankrupt in poker.

Jeeeeeezzzzz

I need to unsub. The willingness of people to ignore the definition of sport, and even to change it, just makes me wonder WTF is wrong with people. I guess to justify sitting at a poker table too much and not doing any strenuous activity.

Seriously. Learn things like the meaning of a word. It will help.................

Thank you.

It is not only your understanding, physical activity is part of the basic description of sport.

I don't consider it as a general sport, but could be open to the idea that when done professionally is a mental sport. But in general I don't class it as a sport

After numerous spliffs, and my fantastic poker play, it takes a lot of physical effort to shove my stacks in, is that the sort of physical activity you mean.
