I’m the tournament director for a casual bi-weekly tournament with 15-20 players. Usually we can handle most situations but in this case I was not present at the tournament and not sure how this should have been handled.
In our tournament we have two decks on the table. One in play and one being shuffled by the big blind for the next hand to expedite time between hands. We don’t have a dedicated dealer, so the player before the small blind deals and this rotates around the table each hand.
We ended up with three players in the hand. The dealer, SB and BB.
Preflop...
Action folds around. Dealer raises 3 big blinds.
SB shoves all in. BB is considering his options when the dealer realized while he was holding the deck he was dealing from, he had been shuffling it.
The three players discuss the situation and decide to play it out with the dealer calling and BB who folding.
SB had KK... dealer had A-9 off.
The player in the dealer position won when he spiked an ace on the river.

My question though, should the hand have been called dead once it was discovered the deck had been shuffled??

It sounds like it should have been played out but I want to be sure in case it happens again.

Thanks

This was not the question I was expecting when I began reading the post. This should never happen. I did not bother searching Robert's Rules because it is just as likely to be covered as "Alien Invasion". Get a freaking cut card!!! As TD you cannot let this happen. I have played with the drunkest, highest, most inexperienced jokers ever and yet, this never happened. Sometimes the wrong stub was used to deal the board even though the decks were different colour (not to mention vastly different sizes 52:30 cards). I believe this falls under the purview of, "whatever you can sort out with the players". If it happens preFlop, then at least you don't have to deal with burn cards, and the whole stub can be shuffled and cut if that's what you can agree upon.

It's a dead hand and should be re-dealt but if they agreed to play it through then, obviously, it stands.

Yeah honestly i dont like the sound of this situation at all...i wouldnt play at a table where there were multiple decks being passed around idk it would just make me uncomfortable unless it was a casino dealer with one deck being played with and one deck inside a auto shuffler being prepped...its oneothing if theres a single dealer thatz not playing or something but...im sure its a common thing but yeah i would not be happy if i had KK and that happened lol it just looks bad for everyone involved from the losers side ya know

Obviously it would come down to what the TD and the players in the hand with money in the pot want to do...but if i was the TD id prob. Call the hand dead unless its only two players and they want to play it and are willing to accept the loss on them...then i would never let that happen again by getting a permanent house dealer who is not playing.
