I am not a smoker, but I think that every health damage badly affects the game of poker,

Maybe not immediately but if you experience a heart attack like I did because of heavy smoking, then your answer is yes. It's not so much the heart attack itself that messes with your thinking but the meds the Drs.will put you on.

I do not think vices affect a game like poker unless you stop before the breaks to smoke in case of tournaments:captain:

When I smoked I didn't want to play if I couldn't smoke. Now that I have quit when someone at my table is smoking it bothers me. Most casinos you can't smoke. It's the home games where you run in to it.

Hey man great question,

There's no right answer here. But it comes down to this.

It depends on how you perceive the habit of smoking. So for example if deep in your mind you have this apprehensive negative opinion about your smoking being a bad habit then yes there are ways it can change your game.

The fact that you are asking if it affects your game clearly is an indication that you are pairing those two things together.

Instead, retrain your mind. Realize the decisions you make with cards are not related to anything else except your own decision during that time. Most buddies and players I play with (in the rare moments I am bankrolled to play live) they also smoke cigs and some herbs.

Perfect example is socially with a few drinks! Its fun and relaxing!

Another perfect example is I was watching a high level Omaha game at the casino and both players played a 4k pot it was a full house vs full house. The losing player stood up, poked a ciggy from his pack pursed it to his lips and walked away from the table to smoke outside and just cool off.

Its a perfect excuse when you lose a big hand to go for a cool off break (5-15 minutes) and light up a cigarrette. :bebored:

Having said that, if you are noticing some physiological health issues then its time to address the health issue on a deeper level and find another "substitute" habit.

That title sounded really good. I quit smoking a pack a day two weeks ago but I have this fantasy of smoking one cigarette here and there and it's dangerous. I bummed one cigarette from my neighbor on day 3 and it wasn't all that great and nothing since. I'm still on nicotine though. It does have an immediate calming effect, and other nicotine effects. Combine this with the physical habit of hand to mouth, and it's a mighty addictive substance and delivery method. I try to remember that cigarettes are a poor choice and therefore not an optimal intellectual decision and let that be my guide. There are so many reasons to not smoke and everyone is educated on the health risks. $6 a day adds up as well. Don't smoke kiddos! I promise if you've never had a cigarette, smoking one will not help you play poker. If you're addicted and feeling flustered, it probably will have a calming effect (but at what cost).

smoking cigarettes kind of helps me with poker, every break time I go for a smoke and im really addicted, after my smoke I go sit down and play even more relaxed. that's the only thing that I think makes me play better.

It is my secret weapon along with taking a walk. It helps calm and clear the mind.

My neighbors must think I am bonkers middle of the night I often make a block around my house smoking.

Being a smoker for many years, I say it just helps me relax at breaks. I think that it would only affect my play if smoking was still allowed at the tables. I for one am very glad they stopped that. (Yes even being a smoker myself I am glad they stopped it at the tables)

Congrats Joshua! I quit in May 2016 after 28 years of smoking. Had 2 stents placed a month ago so it was sobering.

For me, gaming, cigarettes and coffee were all affected by smoking pot. When I smoked pot I gamed more, I drank more coffee but I smoked fewer cigarettes.

Live play its just another tell. I would say it does not affect your play if you do not have to leave the computer to smoke. Cuts down on hands played.

If you smoke and nicotine-dependent, they help. In the other case, they only interfere

I don't ever smoke and play, but I'm around a lot of people that do. It doesn't bother me, but it is uncomfortable breathing in all that smoke.
