ok so if i want to play .5 $1 how much should i deposit i have had $1500 but took some out got to $550 and crashed i have $5000 in a bank acct just for poker i won a couple of $100 events at foxwoods
You'll have seen above where someone posted the standard "not more than 5%" rule. I'm usually comfortable about about 25 buy ins, so assuming you're buying in for $100, I -personally- wouldn't do it without $2,500 actually deposited on the site. Other money doesn't count in my book, due to potential hassles about depositing. I've only done it once.
If you want to try something out, you can, just realize you're effectively nuking that portion from your bankroll. I did that with HU SNGs a while back. No idea if I was going to run +EV or not, so now and again I'd play one thinking about it as if the decision to play was putting a match to the bills. If doing so is a threat to the BR, don't do it, and yes, if you're the kind of person who will lose, lose, lose and keep playing to try to win it back, you have to factor that in. If you have a $500 BR and want to put $100 on a table, I
personally would find that acceptable as long as a $500 and $400 BR is essentially the same to you in terms of risk of ruin, you are a winning player, and you're committed to going back to whatever you win at if you lose the $100. You are compartmentalizing the risk. You're
gambling with $100, and BRMing the balance. If you don't have discipline, that will end badly.
