lets say for instance you have $1000 to invest in poker what do you do? What table stakes do you enter in cash games and what tourney limit do you put yourself at per entry.

I personally would say no more than 50 dollar buy in at a table. and as far as a tourney 10 to 15 dollars is max.

But what do you do when you double or triple up at a 50 dollar buy in game. Do you try to "big boy" with your chip stack or do you get up and re seat yourself and profit 50 to 100 bucks?
I think it depends on 1. Who your playing with personality wise whether some are rage tilting or bluffing to often or think you have them figured out 2. what other players have in their stack.

i like to get up when i hit the 125$ marker or around it at a 50 dollar buy in table or 150% profit..

when it comes to tourneys they are way different. you must be extremely patient and know when you have to lay down a good hand to not risk losing 33% of your chip stack. I've learned this the hard way.
I recall 1 tournament i entered with only 30 entries. it payed 4 or 5 places. When there were 15 to 20 people left I had 3 times as many chips as the 2nd man in the tourney at the time. I lost 2 or 3 big hands where i tried to bluff them off and didnt event finish in the money..

What are your thoughts on where Im going wrong. I know im a decent poker player but just haven't managed to be able to say "hey, slow it down or not that high of stakes, and i go bust. I think I need someone to watch me play so i make better decisions hahaha

With cash games I would not play higher than 25NL with a 1k bankroll, and if I ended up sitting on a table with more than 50$, and other good players had me covered, I would strongly consider leaving that table. It would be situational tough, so if I had some huge fish on my right, I would probably stay and then just look to play snug against the sharks on my left (which hopefully they would not figure out). With MTTs I would play anything between 3,3$ and 11$ and look to keep my average buyin well below 10$. Finally with STTs I would play up to 15$ buyin. Or maybe a mix of 10$ + 20$, if 15$ is not offered on the site.

A $1K starting online bankroll would be nice. I'd first move to canada and start playing at 888 poker; mainly because I've never played there. Seriously though, I'd stick w/a modest strategy like $10 dbl-ups. If you don't mind or prefer ring-games then $.20/.40 - $.40/.80 6-max NLH, maybe a $.10/.20 PLO table, as well.
As far as doing anything wrong I can't really say since poker is a grind and variance is, virtually, on every street. Switching gears in a trny to stay on a respectable rung can be tricky but not impossible. I can easily get distracted and lose focus so I try not to, especially in sng's.

20 - 30 Buy-ins for Cash Game and 150 - 200 Buy-ins for Tournaments as a starting point.
One can play at higher stake if they have an edge over the population.

I agree with people who posted already on what should be your average but in so I wont go there but your comment to tournaments I will..

You said you lose 2 or 3 big hands where you try to bluff them off. Whats probable the issue. You need to read the players and what they tend to do. If they are calling station or call way to light you cant bluff them. There are players you can bluff and other you cant. Its also about the story your telling. If your story does not make sense they will call.

Yeah there is a separate topic in this post about tournament strategy, and its true, that tournaments requires patience and strategic thinking, especially near the bubble and on the final table. Sometimes its good to be aggressive as a big stack, but other times its better to preserve your stack and let the opponents bust each other.

If all I had was a $1000 stake then I would cautiously limit myself to a max of $10 buy-ins, and preferably $3 to $4 buy-ins to safely negotiate the variance.

It's not about bankroll depth. If you don't play well, you can easily lose 100 buy-ins. In any case, I will play at my limit or one limit higher.

This post contains a separate section on tournament tactics, and it is true that tournaments demand patience and strategic thought. I can quickly become sidetracked and lose concentration, so I work hard to avoid doing so, particularly during sng's.

I would prefer tournaments with buy-ins between $3 and $10. For me, this calculation of my bankroll management would be the most comfortable.

I'll have to start using a bankroll, because I've never done that, that's why I've lost all my money.

i agree with your cash game buy in but me personally i would say tournament buy in of 20$ is ok

and i think if you have a big enough bankroll you can (or maybe even SHOULD) not leave the cash table after a small win . at least not always . and imo if the other players are weak or on tilt then there is even more so reason to get max winning in a session

in this case you always play in tournaments. when you have small sums you can also enter single tables, but with sums above $10, always and always tournaments.

You need a far bigger bankroll for Tourneys than for cash, for cash with $1000 I would say you can play 10c-25c which gives you 40 buy ins which
should be enough. In tourneys where you can play a lot of games without cashing I would not play anything bigger than $10 buy ins.
