Hellloooooo, everyone!

After completing my first $20 to $1k challenge ( https://www.cardschat.com/forum/poker-goals-challenges-wins-46/20-till-1000-starting-at-very-304509/ ), I decided to track my poker journey in a non-challenge-like format.

I am planning on doing relatively short 10k hand sprints, where progress and results will be displayed weekly. I will also post updates about my stats and interesting hands on a near daily basis.

I will be playing NL10 and NL20 as my current bankroll allows me to. I hope this turns out as planned, and we can all learn from each other.

For those that are unfamiliar, I play only on 888 with the nickname "kvieplis".

I will officially call my first day the 12th of February, so all the results will be tracked from there:

Managed to dig myself out of a nasty hole. Made 2 mistakes - called off with 2 pair on a 4-to-straight board, and GII w/ AKs pre vs JJ - didn't hit. But, well, some straight forward poker got me back on track.

Any questions / recommendations / lessons / advice / comments are more than welcome. :icon_sant

I AM BAAACKKK!!!!

As the summer holidays have started for me (got my BSc in Electrical and Electronic Engineering), I have come back from the dead.

Played some 2h today, and spent most of the time reviewing my hands.

Felt VERY rusty, however, after the review was done, it seemed like I was remembering a thing or two about micro stakes cash games.

Anyhow, enough mambo-jambo, I played 2h of NL5 (4-tabling) today.

In.... hi.

#1:
I would fold turn as well. This guy has to be strong here, K is way better for his range than ours... We tried, on to the next hand....

#2:
I would just call the river. The only way I shove is if the opponent is some super station masterpiece, who literally is unable to fold 1p. When he called, I would assume in that brief second, you were concerned if you were beat. Just call. Too thin to shove IMO.... People love to raise Ax BvB, so, yeah, I don't like river shove. It just seems like we are only called by better/value owning ourselves.

#3:
I call flop, and I'm getting more suspicious on the turn, but I call that as well. River is just a sigh fold IMO. I assume no reads to speak of? Like dude is unloading the clip, 3 barrels, and we have a meh hand. Fold river, IMHO.

#4:
Well played. He goes from check/call to offensive overbet donk on the turn. I would suspect he has a straight somehow, and I would fold as well. Sometimes he bluffs us here, but I do think it was the correct fold, based on things I see people do in live low stakes poker. They take similar lines when they get there, to protect their hands, and allow us to play perfectly and fold.

And lastly, I play all live poker, where opponents are so passive, they nearly always have what they are representing, so this may bias my advice.

Buddy first off we need some stats for the villains to assist with the analysis.
I agree with the analysis of BeanfaceK but i'll add a few extras.
: Hero is MP with 9
spade4.gif
9
heart4.gif

UTG raises to $0.15, Hero calls $0.15, 3 folds, BB raises to $0.60, UTG folds, Hero calls $0.45
Flop: ($1.37) 4

BB bets $0.68, Hero calls $0.68
Turn: ($2.73) K
club4.gif
(2 players)
BB bets $1.36, Hero folds
The worst he's likely to have here imo is AK, its an easy fold on the turn. I note the flop cbet sizing is half pot. He either had AK and was cbetting cheap or he has AA KK and was just trying to keep you in, either way you are now beat nearly always. Most players at 5nl would check QQ JJ when the K lands on the turn in a 3bet pot.
If the turn was another low card it might be a call depending on what we know about him, ie if he's generally passive and firing easy fold, if he's aggro and capable of barelling AK unimproved then it might have to be a call down. The fact that it was a squeeze preflop leans me more towards strength so I'd probably fold to most bets on the turn tbh. Without stats I can't assist more.

: Hero is BB with K
spade4.gif
Q

2 folds, SB raises to $0.15, Hero raises to $0.37, SB calls $0.22
Flop: ($0.74) 4

K

SB bets $1.38, Hero raises to $8.97 and is all-in, SB calls $3.78 and is all-in
Perfectly standard until you spazzed on the river. He's betting into you with value sizing, its just a call especially as he called the 3bet preflop, he's going to have mostly pairs and good Ace high hands when he sticks around. Nothing worse calls and nothing better folds

He can't wait to build a pot so he likely has a hand with good equity against us, either a decent spade draw, 67 or it's the old set mine with a small pair from the blinds. Normally the draws are going to check call/check raise rather than lead, again your read should be helped by their levels of aggression. This is a good spot to minraise the turn to try and get a cheaper showdown with a medium strength hand. This is one of John A's tricks and it works best in single raised pots like this rather than the 99 hand above where the pot is bloated and thus where it would be too expensive.
We min raise the turn to $1.70
, if he is bluffing air he folds, if he is drawing he will call and we get to charge his draws a bit more. If he reraises again its an easy fold on the turn.
On the river if he bets into us we are beat and can safely fold, very few players are capable of bluffing their missed draws when they have been min raised on the turn.
All of his medium strength hands will check the river and we can check behind for the cheaper showdown... Ergo the min raise costs 1.70 and we don't put in another cent; but calling the turn and river combined cost us 85c plus $2.22 ($3.07) clearly a substantial saving and we get to sleep better at night.
The logic is...The more strength we can get the villain to show in repsonse to our own betting the more we can rely on the information obtained.

You can tell from his stack size that he's a fish and he can't wait to get his money in probably with the nuts, I concur easy fold.

Thank you very much, guys, for the input.

As I said, I feel rather rusty, and may make some ridiculous moves every now and then (as my all-in on the river was), which is why I am looking for help.

Regarding stats - literally every single one of these is vs a guy with whom I have no more than 10 hands played. I just checked. Anyhow, it feels good to be back on track, and now I enjoy analyzing even a bit more than playing, haha.

Thanks agian!

Session of Jul 15th

Today's session went smooth. Played very well. :) Happy with the result. Gonna analyze some hands tomorrow...

Didn't play too much, as I started quite late at night and I have a soar throat, so I'm keeping my sessions short. :icon_sant

Hope y'all are having a nice day!

I notice that you don't ask for advice on how much better you could have played hands that you won.

Don't let only your losses teach you.

Good point! I have so many misplays on a daily basis that I would like to fix, so I guess I am presenting the most urgent (at least imo) mistakes I am making.

?? Maybe better to have not posted the result on this one, it's difficult not to be influenced by knowing the result here.

Yeah he played it well and convinced you he was weak. Checking can be a powerful tool!
However after your small call of his flop lead I'm not sure you are shifting a pair better than 55 with any sizing. A decent J maybe would be raising to extract from pairs and to protect against overcards dropping in.
I mean if I was in the BB here with 77 88 99 TT you are probably getting called, especially towards 99 TT as you could also be doing this for value with 66 77 88, it doesn't look like you have a J after your flop call and it is a rather obvious spot to try and push someone off a chop.
Try to think what he would bet like that on the flop, some sort of value feeler with a pair under Jacks or a weak jack or even a 5 trying to induce makes sense to me.

Fold the flop. Never chase. This is why cash games are nicer because if the stats don't support a chase you never have to.

He is going to have the best hand a good chunk of times on this flop.

I think you already realized this Ian but there is no point in betting that much when a bet of $1.70 can yield the same results. Also look up Zeebos theorem, hard to make villains fold a boat, especially at 5NL.

Out of the remaining cards only six will help in terms of the turn, he won't know if villain has two pair with j either of a or q shows

Once villain calls pre and donks the flop we assign him a range. Villain could be donking with just about anything, including weak A highs, 5x and Jx.

Ace Poker Drills Poker Equity Calculator
Board: 5c Jh 5s

Equity Win Tie Hand Range
37.0633% 34.6456% 2.4177% [ AsQc ]
62.9367% 60.519% 2.4177% [ J2s+(100), QJs(100), KJs(100), A9s-AJs(100), J6o+(100), A2s-A5s(100), A5o(100), A9o-AJo(100) ]

This is just a rough guesstimate of his range, as an example. I would need more details for a more specific reading but either way he bet .05 into .41 so we only need 10% equity to call, which we almost have if we had just an A as outs.

From the fact alone that he called pre raise with j6o, I think even having a 5 should be a possible hand you consider for his range. That's why I would just fold to what he bet on the flop, and turns out I'd be right to.

Also since pre raise doesn't seem to scare this BB, I wouldn't bet 17 if bets can be as low as 5

I did put 5s in there but at the end of the day we only need 10% equity so it's a correct call. Like I said that range was just an example to explain the fact that we are not just drawing.

I don't understand your 2nd statement.

To suggest folding on the flop to a 5c bet is too prescriptive and giving up too easily imo, we have position and two streets to come to assess his bet sizing. He is clearly a weak player and those sort of players can be bluffed off Jx and mid pairs if any overcard comes.

He raised too much preflop. If the villain flops anything significant and A and Queen both don't show he is pretty screwed.

If he flops Ace or Queen and raises at flop, villain has easy fold.
