i need your help. There is only one venue to play where I live. And the 1-3 game I play in generally has a decent amount of money on the table. Sounds perfect I know. However I have quite an interesting issue. The people that play here have decent poker knowledge, but usually lack the ability to use it. It seems like almost every time I play my monsters get beat by 2-4, 9-3, k-7. I’ve tried widening my range, while still playing positionally aware and it doesn’t seem to be affective. It’s the common issue of too many people in bloated pots making it hard for me to afford staying in the hand, and when I catch a hand and stay in the hand I’m getting ripped by crud. Please help, I know it has to be something I need to change strategically.

have you tried exploitative play?

I would stay away from widening your range. But rather when you have a value hand change your standard open amount to avoid multi-way pots.

So if you generally have an open amount of 3x start opening 5x.

Also, widen your 3 bet range especially in position. This will let you play more hands but be in control.

Exploitative play works the best though against these players, they will each generally have their mistakes like being too bullish, limping too often, raising too much... these are all times to attack. if they are bullish, trap with monsters, If they are limping too often punish the limpers with large squeezes, if they are raising too often now it's time to put that new three bet range to work.

Make sure that you are well polished on your post flop play, because this is where you are going to make or break in a cash game. In cash games we deal MUCH more with post flop play than tournament players do, so it's super important to have an edge here.

Hope this helps..

if your opponents do not have a decent game of poker you have to be careful with your game form because they will call with any one thing but it does not mean that it is a disadvantage but rather it is an advantage because it is easier to trap them you just have to create a strategy of viable game more if they are players who like to play with anything:bike:

When $1/$3 is the only game

The key is to understand if 1/3 is the highest table then you are most likely playing against people who WISH they were playing 5/10. They won't see a $30 bet as a 10BB reason to get out of the pot, they are going to see a $30 bet as a 3BB reason to stick around. These people are playing at what they consider micro-stakes because they don't have anything bigger they can be playing at. Throwing away a $10 3BB bet is meaningless and shoving with $100 is just enough to make them want to gamble and try for it, not enough to "hurt them" bad enough to force a fold. I have the same problem at my local casino. The only suggestion I have is to not try to push people out of hands. Don't be the pot builder, let the pots build themselves and just get out of any hand which isn't going to be a showdown winner. Then, when you have the entire table thinking you NEVER bet or raise (after like an hour or so) then you can start betting and raising and getting folds (sometimes).
I know this sounds like whimpy poker, but just give it a try in 1 session and see if you at least last longer.

Guys, this is a lot of great Info. I literally just started using this site getting back into poker. And seeing a community that cares about sharing the game with a level of respect for others who love it is incredible. Thank you all for your replies and I will be implementing all of this info into my next session.:D:D:D

if you are playing tight and just monsters id suggest raising more prefold which will get the marginal hands to fold at least in theory.

It also depends a lot on how deep the stacks are. If the stacks are e.g. 300+ BB then a 1/3 game plays like a 2/5 or even 5/10 game with 100 BB deep.

Against a loose table always play tight but make sure that you raise bigger then 3 BB if stacks are much bigger then 100 BB and see how far you can go before everyone starts folding. And 3 bet or fold unless your about to close the action (SB or BB).

Betting bigger preflop is also a means to thin the field and get more heads up which is better for good hands as they play easier heads up then multi way.
