Hi Grinders,

I'm back after a long break. Nearly 6 months. I needed to get out and concentrate on life for a while. Got a lot of stuff done, caught up with friends and family, and allowed the burnout to subside ... so now it feels good to be back at the tables. Clear mind.

Anyway onto Poker. I've been digging through my database from last year and I have a good sample of hands to discuss. So I'm posting up my stats for my last 95,000 hands. These were played mostly at NL2 exclusively on pokerstars. I took several shots at NL5, NL10 and NL25. I multi-tabled between 3 and 4 at once. I concentrated on making good decisions and not tilting. The sudden rise of my redline after 70,000 hands was after a major leak busting session. The focus of this review was to identify passivity and weakness in my play and destroy it. My winrate over this sample was 5.5bb/100.

I am asking for your very expert comments and recommendations. All feedback welcome. How did I do? Should I move up?

I'm looking forward to getting back to grinding. Thanks.

Rage

Same. Delighted they dropped the Buyin. Makes so much more sense. Yeah it’s not much of a return I know but NL2 is like that. 6bb / 100 is like 15 cent per hour! So I’m not disappointed or surprised

NVM my new browser is showing the pic now. Solid TAG, without sounding like a douche why bother playing micro high rake cash game. See if you can win a tournament or two and get into the low stakes games....grinding 1 cent 2 cent is a hell of a grind.

Thank you. I have a strong enough bankroll now for NL5 with shots at NL10. So I will play 100,000 more hands and post up my progress soon

That’s what I thought. Yeah I do play MTTs from time to time but mostly SNG as I enjoy the lower variance. I like the flexibility of cash, being able to come and go. Fits around my life much better. Much less antisocial as you can drop it any time when a friend or family member needs you. You’re right it is a grueling grind but my goal is to prove that it can be done. I’m just going to keep going and move up when I have each bankroll, and then post up my graphs and stats here.

My opinion

Rage, welcome back. I think you should surprise the next level and move up. After the break you could probably take the small tables by storm but you would be in the same deal your in now. You play poker and move up until you are satisfied with your living conditions. When you are satisfied its best to just give web site cost and screw around a little.

Thanks. Good advice. Yeah I just think I’m done with NL2. I can’t think on the level I want to there. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy winning money easier but I enjoy playing skilled opponents more than getting the cash. Both is nice. Fish and donkeys can literally do anything and have anything at any time. While this can be fun in terms of range vs range, it actually increases the variance a large amount. And so I actually find the climb much steadier playing against people who are thinking. Because there are practical limits to what they might do. I have moved up now and am more comfortable than I thought I would be. Thank you for your feedback.

100% agree. Sometimes it's even hard to find people who think at 2/5 NL but man is it less of a variant coaster than micro stakes...

I can’t imagine playing at 2/5 or higher. I hope someday I will get there.

I take it you're playing full ring. Have you put in many hands at 6max? I honestly believe that playing 6max gives you a greater opportunity for learning as it is a more aggressive game.

I think choosing to move up slowly is a great idea. There are many players who think of playing poker in terms of 'how much $ return on time invested', whereas I look at it much more like "the amount of time I enjoy spending playing a game while at the same time I am learning & trying to improve --- building up a good base of knowledge".
Playing some tournaments occasionally in hopes of a good score is fine if &/or when you have the time... but as I know that you know, it is a DIFFERENT game. Playing 100bb deep cash games can definitely help a tournament player, especially with post-flop play but there's many other things one needs to focus on in a tournament. It's usually best to do one format or the other (imo... & others).

5nl is definitely a step up from 2nl.. Good luck!
Personally if I were you, I'd put in another 30k hands playing 6max at 2nl, then move up to 5nl

Thanks for this. Really detailed and useful reply. I have actually played a little 6-max and it’s very fun. So much bluff catching to do in it as the ranges are enormous. I’d say I’ve played probably 10% 6-Max 90% full ring. So you make an interesting proposal. The swings are crazy at 6m so I’d probably have a graph with much deeper oscillations. I will try your advice.

You know it’s time to move up when you sit down at a small stakes game and the regs instantly leave the table

Thank you naydanazar and all. And sorry to hear about your blackjack tilt Swanny. I was OBSESSED with blackjack years ago. Lost my shirt. But I don't regret it as it led me to Poker. But it is a very dangerous game. I suggest that you ask to be banned from all Casino activity on ACR. I think you can do that. You certainly can on Stars anyway. Lesson learned my friend. See the good, you won't do it again. And if you do, well :) it's on you.

What does 5bb/100 mean ?

It is a win rate which yields a profit of 5 big blinds per 100 hands played. E.g. a €0.10/€0.25 player with a 5bb/100 win rate can expect to make €1.25 for every 100 hands played.
